Position Purpose
The Fire Systems Maintenance Supervisor manages the team responsible for maintaining and repairing all fire and life safety systems on campus, such as alarms, sprinklers, emergency lights, and backup generators. This role involves planning and scheduling work, supervising staff and subcontractors, ensuring safety and quality standards are met, managing budgets and supplies, and communicating with campus leadership and the community.

Join Dartmouth as a Fire Systems Maintenance Supervisor and lead the critical work of keeping our campus safe! You'll manage a skilled team maintaining fire alarms, sprinklers, emergency lighting, and backup power systems. If you have strong leadership skills, experience coordinating maintenance projects, and a passion for safety and compliance, this role is for you. Collaborate across campus, manage budgets and contractors, and ensure top-quality, efficient life safety systems. A working knowledge of NFPA Life Safety Codes and fire/life safety systems is required.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Graduate of a technical school with working knowledge of NFPA Life Safety Codes and fire/life safety systems, or an Associate's degree or equivalent experience in life safety systems.
  • More than 8 years of relevant experience, or the equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Must meet Dartmouth College's Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of trades involved in maintaining fire alarms, fire detection, suppression systems, emergency lighting, and generators.
  • Skilled in reading and understanding construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience estimating, scheduling, and managing projects involving multiple trades.
  • Knowledge of safety codes, building regulations, and College policies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work well with staff, college personnel, and contractors.
  • Willingness to work overtime when needed.
  • Proficient with computers and standard business software.
  • Experience maintaining documentation for testing and inspections using software or filing systems.
  • Commitment to completing and maintaining all required safety and trade-related training.

  • Manage performance, hiring, and mentoring of direct reports and coordinate effectively with other department managers to ensure smooth workflows.

Service Delivery

  • Develop and implement emergency response plans to quickly and effectively handle fire safety system failures or emergencies.
  • Use best practices and work order management systems to schedule, monitor, and review maintenance activities and performance metrics.
  • Oversee the delivery of preventive, emergency, and planned maintenance programs that ensure the reliable operation of fire and life safety systems.
  • Estimate costs for work orders as needed and ensure timely completion of maintenance work while managing risks and material availability.
  • Communicate clearly with FO&M leadership and other stakeholders regarding risks, issues, and operational status.

  • Provide excellent customer service by addressing concerns promptly and courteously, building trust with the college community.
  • Manage relationships with contractors and suppliers to ensure quality service delivery.
  • Serve as a point of escalation for service-related issues and work order concerns, resolving or escalating as appropriate.

Planning and Budgeting

  • Participate in the planning of capital projects with fire safety considerations and assist in developing annual maintenance plans.
  • Manage the operating budget for the Fire Systems Maintenance Shop, including tracking expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Oversee procurement and inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment needed for shop operations.
  • Manage contracts and ensure third-party vendors and subcontractors meet performance and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with financial staff to ensure proper fiscal and resource management within assigned responsibilities.
