Position Purpose
The Custodial Day Shift Manager oversees daily custodial operations during the assigned day shift, ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment across a large and diverse campus portfolio. This role leads multiple supervisors and team leads who oversee a sizable custodial workforce, ensuring compliance with safety and sanitation protocols, managing staffing, training, equipment, supply procurement, and inventory. The manager also coordinates custodial support for campus events and emergency responses, acting as a key liaison between custodial staff, campus stakeholders, and building occupants to foster collaboration and deliver exceptional service tailored to the needs of a higher education environment.
Description
Dartmouth is seeking a Custodial Day Shift Manager to lead custodial services across a large, vibrant higher education campus. You will oversee three supervisors, two leads, and more than 100 custodial staff who maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment spanning millions of square feet. This position offers the chance to manage diverse teams, support campus events, oversee budgets, and respond to emergencies-all while fostering a collaborative and inclusive workplace. Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent skills and experience
  • Minimum seven years of experience in hospitality, higher education, healthcare, or a related field
  • At least five years managing teams of 10 or more custodial or housekeeping employees
  • Experience managing custodial operations spanning multiple million square feet of facilities and large staff groups
  • Experience working in a unionized work environment
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a higher education or residential operations environment
  • Proven ability to create, revise, and adapt standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Knowledge of applicable safety standards, vendor management, and inventory control
  • Skilled in planning and implementing operational goals, managing budgets, and handling complex personnel matters
  • Proficiency with work order and timekeeping software (e.g., Smart Inspect, Kronos)
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability initiatives

Custodial Department Management

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for major departmental software systems, including timekeeping (e.g., Kronos), work order, and inspection software, supporting supervisors' effective use of these tools
  • Manage custodial operations covering cleaning standards, equipment inventory, supply procurement, and vendor relationships
  • Ensure adherence to safety, sanitation, and industry best practices (e.g., ISSA, APPA)
  • Coordinate custodial support for campus events including Commencement, Reunions, and dorm turnover
  • Direct custodial response to emergencies such as snow removal, floods, and fires
  • Monitor and manage departmental operational and capital budgets. Propose current-year adjustments and next fiscal year projections

  • Act as the primary liaison between custodial teams, building occupants, and campus stakeholders Collaborate with academic, athletic, real estate, and facilities groups to align custodial services with operational needs
  • Represent custodial operations in cross-functional meetings and departmental discussions
  • Assist with communication strategies to inform staff and customers about operational changes and initiatives
  • Serve as interim Custodial Services Director when needed
