Position Description

The Director of Risk Management is responsible for the strategic oversight and management of the university system's risk financing and insurance portfolio. This role focuses on optimizing risk transfer mechanisms, evaluating and implementing self-funding strategies, and ensuring comprehensive coverage for institutional exposures. The Director of Risk Management collaborates with internal stakeholders and external partners to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions that align with the university's risk tolerance and long-term financial goals.

Major/Essential Functions


  1. Strategic Risk Financing - Develop and implement long-term strategies for risk financing, including traditional insurance and alternative risk transfer mechanisms.
  2. Insurance Portfolio Management - Oversee the procurement, renewal, and administration of all insurance policies.
  3. Self-Funding Program Development - Identify areas that might benefit from self-funding and provide direction and management of those initiatives.
  4. Risk Assessment & Mitigation - Collaborate with departments to identify insurable and business risks and recommend appropriate solutions.
  5. Regulatory Adherence & Reporting - Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local insurance regulations.
  6. Claims Oversight - Manage the claims administration function for all insured and uninsured claims.
  7. Stakeholder Engagement & Education - Lead the cultivation and relationship management with TTUS, component institutions, vendors, brokers, state and federal organizations on risk management exposure issues.
  8. Administrative Oversight -Serve as Deputy Risk Officer in support of or in the absence of the AVC, Risk and Compliance Officer.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area required plus five years progressively responsible management experience. Additional education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree with 10 or more years of experience. Superior candidates will possess one or more of the following designations or degrees: Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Certified Insurance Counselor, Masters in Risk Management, Associate in Risk Management, Certified Risk Manager, or other related degree or designation.
