Job Description

Lead Mobile Software Engineer

WGU is looking for a Lead Mobile Software Engineer to shape the future of our student-facing mobile app, a platform already used by over 20,000 learners and poised to impact all 180,000+ enrolled students nationwide.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll set the technical vision, mentor a growing team, and help drive our potential migration to Flutter - enabling a "write once, deploy everywhere" mobile experience. Your work will directly enhance how students connect with faculty, track progress, and engage with their degree journey.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as tech lead for a team of 7 engineers

  • Balance 70% coding with 30% leadership - code reviews, mentoring, and design direction.

  • Partner closely with product, UX, and architecture to shape features and set patterns.

  • Guide the technical direction of our mobile app migration to Flutter, modernizing how we build and scale.

  • Ensure code quality, CI/CD best practices, and cross-team collaboration to deliver a seamless student experience.

What You Bring
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong expertise in mobile development (iOS, Android, or cross-platform).

  • Proven ability to evaluate tradeoffs across platforms (native, Flutter, React Native, etc.).

  • Strong background in API integration and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction.

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

  • Bonus: Experience leading a migration or working with Flutter or React Native.

Why Join Us
  • Impact: Your work shapes the daily experience of thousands of students and supports the mission of the largest university in the U.S.

  • Innovation: Be at the forefront of our Flutter migration, influencing a strategic technology shift.

  • Balance: Lead and mentor while still staying close to the code.

  • Stability + Mission: Higher education is recession-resistant - and here, you'll build software with purpose.
