The department of Athletics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Trades Specialist II (Lead Painter). About the Opportunity Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Trades Specialist II (Lead Painter) is responsible for the supervision, installation, and application of various paint mediums, drywall, wall coverings and topcoat finishes as outlined by Supervisor and University guidelines. What You'll Do
- Supervise the Painter (1). Delegate and prioritize responsibilities; monitor work schedule, time sheets, leave requests and overtime; responsible for hiring, training and evaluation.
- Receive work orders. Interface with Supervisor, Managers, and requesting party to finalize projects needs and scope.
- Read and review prints on new and existing projects for repair or construction associated with specific job duties and expertise. Individual will also develop as-built sketches of completed projects.
- Determine and recommend to the Supervisor the needs of the project in regard to schedule, materials needed, material availability, equipment needed, etc.
- Estimate material needed and associated costs.
- Procure and inventory materials and tools as needed.
- Lead others in the effort to/and apply in a professional manner, paints, varnishes, shellacs, acrylics, urethanes, enamels, latex, stains, anti-skid coating, and other mediums utilizing necessary apparatus within respiratory guidelines and physical conditions.
- Professionally lead and apply medium using brushes, rollers, sprayers, sponges, tape guns, texturing tools, paint shakers, etc.
- Lead others in the effort to/and professionally prepare surfaces for paint through various procedures including but not limited to, sanding, scraping, cleaning, high pressure water blasting, high pressure sand blasting, chemical etching, chipping, pneumatic and electric grinding/sanding, pneumatic chipping.
- Lead others in the effort to/and professionally hang and finish drywall. Repair small areas of drywall as required ensuring proper topcoat application. Interpret building blueprints and specifications.
- Lead others in the effort to/and professionally apply finishes and refinish wood items such as furniture, cabinets, door frames, wood flooring, public speaking podiums, and presentation/award plaques.
- Direct the erection of various working platforms to include but not limited to metal and aluminum pipe scaffolding, pick boards, ladder jacks, extension ladders, step ladders, etc. Must be knowledgeable or proper assembly and disassembly procedures, as well as safety railings, kick boards, safety harnesses, and fall protection devices. Must ensure that all safety procedures and understood and followed by assigned employees.
- Operate various types of motorized aerial work platforms and truck mounted lifts, including scissor, boom, and bucket trucks.
- Maintain the athletics department paint file and painting records.
- Maintain a clean, safe working environment utilizing proper protection and ventilation. This includes the usage of drop cloths, taping of protected surfaces and using proper exhaust equipment. The position interfaces with the maintenance supervisor and other managers, and the requesting party to determine work needs.
- Assist with various multi-trade renovation projects.
- Ensure all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained under direction of Supervisor.
- Maintain cleanliness of assigned areas by mechanical or hand methods.
- Ensure that work area is a clean, safe working environment utilizing proper protection, barricades and ventilation equipment.
- Perform game event set-up support for all home athletic events including those outside of normal working hours.
- Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to employees
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Associate Athletic Director for Facilities/Operations.
- Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA; must adhere to NCAA Bylaw 11.1 Conduct of Athletic Personnel. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.

- Manage professional and personal time to be handle time sensitive-issues, tight deadlines, extended hours beyond the normal workday, weekend work, and on-call availability.
- Faithfully and diligently execute related duties of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as requested or assigned by Supervisor and/or Associate Athletic Director for Facilities/Operations.
Pay Grade: 15 Hours: 8:15am to 4:45pm
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience involving:
- Full-time painting experience
- Familiar with various paint manufactures
- Experience installing/finishing gypsum board systems.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations.
- Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to lift, bend, stop, walk, reach, and stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring frequent and prolonged exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, moving parts, noise, and/or extreme outdoor weather conditions or extreme variations of indoor temperatures.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and equipment with a standard transmission.
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret drawings, blueprints, specifications, and related regulatory codes and requirements.
- Ability to operate a personal computer.
- Ability to climb heights over ten feet.
- Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
- Ability to work with people in a stressful environment.
- Ability to have excellent eye to hand coordination.
- Ability to hear and interpret sounds in work area and verbal instructions.
- Ability to lift materials over 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
- Ability to use logical problem solving techniques.
- Ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work in uncomfortable positions as may be required by job assignment.
- Ability to work with multi-craft personnel.
- Ability to carry heavy (50 - 75 lbs.) or awkward objects.
- Ability to stop, bend, walk, crawl, etc. over rough or slippery surfaces.
Requirements
Valid Driver's License - to operate department vehicles.
