Job Description
Job Description The Executive Director plays a central role in guiding strategic planning, business development, and performance improvement initiatives that drive better patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and financial strength. This leader also supports leadership development and succession planning within the service line team. The Executive Director oversees business development and financial performance for assigned service lines and leads the creation of strategic growth plans that address market share expansion, facilities planning, and integration across inpatient and outpatient care settings. Essential Functions: Growth - Market Share & Financial Performance
- Develop and execute multi-year strategic and business plans to grow service line volume, market share, and contribution margin. aligned with health system priorities, including detailed assessments of market share, growth opportunities, financial impacts, and operational utilization.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities, including service expansion, physician recruitment strategies, and partnership opportunities.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for assigned service lines by staying current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and innovations in care delivery.
- Collaborate with Marketing and Outreach teams to design and implement targeted campaigns that elevate service line visibility and patient engagement.
- Lead physician outreach efforts to build trust, identify referral opportunities, and strengthen alignment with independent and affiliated providers.
- Partner with Revenue Management and Health Plan Contracting teams to identify opportunities to enhance reimbursement and overall financial performance.
- Lead the development of annual and multi-year capital and operating budgets, aligning financial planning with strategic priorities while forecasting resource needs and establishing systems to monitor key performance indicators such as volume, revenue, and cost efficiency.
Quality - Enhancing and Improving Quality, Service, and Operations
- Collaborate with Medical Directors, Nursing, and Quality teams to define and track clinical goals, quality benchmarks, and patient experience improvements.
- Leads development of annual Medical Director Goals, partnering with Medical Directors, and integrating these goals into service line activities
- Utilize dashboards and data analytics to monitor performance and drive continuous improvement in clinical outcomes, efficiency, patient satisfaction, and financial performance.
- Support accreditation and certification efforts, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices.
- Facilitate root cause analyses and quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with clinical and operational leaders.
- Operates as the subject matter expert for the Service Line, ensuring compliance with health system policies and all relevant Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies, and Standards.
Program Integration and Operations
- Lead the integration of service line components across hospital campuses and ambulatory sites to ensure seamless, patient-centered care delivery.
- Oversee Medical Directorships and support alignment of physician agreements with service line goals.
- Develop internal and external relationships with physicians and managers to achieve program reputation and growth.
- Facilitate service line committees and workgroups, ensuring effective governance, communication, and execution of initiatives.
- Collaborate with operational leaders to optimize resource utilization, care coordination, and service delivery models.
Fund Development
- Partner with the El Camino Health Foundation to identify philanthropic opportunities that support service line growth, innovation, and education.
- Contribute to the development of compelling cases for support and engage in donor-facing activities as needed.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Healthcare or Business Administration required.
- Minimum 8 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare, including at least 3 years' experience in the development and leadership of a major service line.
- Demonstrated facilitative leadership skills. Able to lead through collaboration, influence, and relationship-building in complex, matrixed environments, empowering stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to strategic initiatives.
- Established expertise in financial analysis, strategic planning, and business development, with a strong track record of identifying cost reduction opportunities and driving revenue growth across complex healthcare environments.
- Proven ability to synthesize market trends, competitor intelligence, operational data, and financial metrics to conduct SWOT analyses and develop actionable, system-wide service line strategies.
- Advanced skills in market analysis, including referral pattern evaluation, market share assessment, and opportunity identification; solid understanding of quality and efficiency metrics to support performance improvement initiatives.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, especially with physicians.
- Experience in high-performing service lines such as Heart & Vascular, Cancer, Neurosciences, Orthopedics, or Women's Health at the Director level preferred.
