Overview

Illinois CancerCare is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Referral Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for processing and tracking all external referrals ordered by providers, ensuring timely scheduling for patients, and maintaining accurate documentation. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to patient confidentiality are essential.

Pay Range: $16.00 - $22.00 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Complete referral forms and generate orders for any outside referrals ordered by ILCC providers.
  • Check QCL list daily to ensure all referrals have been sent to outside offices.
  • Document in the patient chart that the referral has been sent and update the referral spreadsheet.
  • Follow up with referring offices to ensure patients are scheduled in a timely manner.
  • Update provider teams with appointment date and times of referrals.
  • Scan referral confirmation into the patient's chart.
  • Update the referral order with the appointment date and time.
  • Maintain files and records in a confidential manner and adhere to all HIPAA regulations.
  • Answer telephones and receive and send faxes to and from referring offices.
  • Adherence to the ILCC employee handbook, HIPAA policies, and ILCC code of conduct.
  • Perform clinic and clerical-related responsibilities as requested or directed.
  • Perform all other duties as requested.

SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires sitting at a desk for extensive periods of time.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS/TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The employee has limited exposure to toxic substances and is expected to be familiar with the dangers and proper handling of such.
  • The employee has limited exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to the clinical environment.
  • Safety policies and good health practices are to be understood and observed.
  • Work is performed in an office environment with frequent contact with staff and patients.
  • Work may be repetitious, and in a high-stress environment.
  • Contact may involve dealing with angry and/or upset people.

Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent.

Three years of experience in a clinical medical office preferred.
