Job Description

The primary responsibilities include program planning and management for the Department of Athletics and Student Activities, as well as serving as an assistant to the director on departmental leadership and supervision. The assistant ensures alignment, communication, and visionary leadership to support athletic and student activity senior leadership. The assistant director assists the director in the following areas:

Develops and implements procedures and processes that support implementation of ACPS' Strategic Plan through providing professional learning; managing school athletics and student activities; and, supervising school events across the Alexandria City High School (ACHS) connected network, e.g. King Street, Minnie Howard, Chance for Change (CFC), and Satellite campuses. Collaborates with the executive administrative team to support the growth of the athletic and student activity program in collaboration with ACPS feeder middle schools (for rising 9th graders). Collaborates with student leadership and the high school's executive administrative team to align the goals of student activities with the instructional program and overall school operations. Identifies activities and community partnerships that support the holistic development of students; implements a student support program that monitors students' academic status and provides interventions and supports to help them be successful. Creates and encourages professional development programs to ensure the staff acquires the requisite knowledge, skill, and abilities to meet the changing needs of students and society.

Qualifications:



  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in a related area (Master's Degree preferred)


  • Certificates & Licenses: (Preferred, but not Required): (Preferred, but not Required): Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one, with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision.


  • Possess 2-5 years of leadership or partnership management in a non-profit, municipal sector, or education setting. Able to execute on and contribute to department-level strategic plans. Demonstrated leadership experience necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, families, and community members.



Key Competencies:

The Assistant Director will assist the Director in the management and execution of the following areas:



  • Responsible for developing and overseeing the execution of strategic social media and digital initiatives for the ACHS Athletic Department, including developing and managing marketing campaigns, creating and supervising the posting of stories/team stats/player stats, and integrating interactive applications into overall business strategies.
  • Create processes for daily communications using various methods regarding upcoming events, results, and any other related athletics and student activities news.
  • Updates website and social media using advanced skills in the area. Finds new and innovative ways of social media outreach.
  • Acts as a direct liaison to the ACPS Communication Office to ensure that all aspects of social media related to athletics and student activities are fully realized.
  • Supervise and coordinate the student athletic intern program, including recruitment, placement, training, and evaluation of student interns within the athletic department while ensuring compliance with school policies and providing mentorship opportunities that enhance career readiness.
  • Oversee student clubs and fundraising activities, including approval and coordination of fundraising events, monitoring compliance with school policies and state regulations, and providing guidance to student organizations to ensure successful execution of activities that support the school.
  • Develop and implement standardized vetting processes for student activity requests to ensure appropriate evaluation and approval of proposed clubs, events, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Maintain athletic event calendars and coordinate scheduling with the school executive team and facilities manager for school-wide events, ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders regarding event logistics, facility availability, and any scheduling changes or conflicts.
  • Supports the Director in the eligibility process of athletes.


Essential Functions



  • Reports directly to the Director of Athletics & Student Activities through regular meetings; prepares and submits detailed reports to keep the Director informed of program updates, trends, and progress.
  • Assists the Director of Athletics and Student Activities in game management, operations, supervision, and facility management.
  • Assumes a leadership role in all facets of school program management and coordination, including emerging programs and best practices in adherence to the ACPS 2030 Strategic Plan mission and goals. Implements an onboarding process for all athletic and student activity staff, e.g. coaches, student activity sponsors, etc.
  • Works collaboratively with Department of Athletic and Student Activity staff to ensure ongoing professional learning aligned with ACPS' Strategic Plan and ACHS vision/mission.
  • Assists with the budget development for program implementation, professional development, partnership contributions, and facilities and equipment maintenance.
  • Provides support for the achievement of goals articulated in the ACPS 2030 Strategic Plan and benchmark metrics specified in the ACPS Education Plan.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Athletics and Student Activities and the Middle School Athletic Coordinators for effective communication and recruitment of students from middle schools to the ACHS programs.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the athletic and student activities program.
