Featured Job Sr. Licensed Vocational Nurse - General Medicine
Job Summary This role is initially expected to last approximately 3 months, with a strong possibility of extension.
UCSF Health is seeking a compassionate and experienced Senior Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to join the General Internal Medicine team. The Senior LVN delivers patient-centered care across a diverse population, providing clinical and administrative support in a dynamic primary care environment.
This role involves close collaboration with physicians, nurses, medical assistants, and clerical staff in a "teamlet" structure, using the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model. The LVN supports clinical services such as medication and vaccine administration, wound care, urethral catheterization, health coaching, patient education, and Point-of-Care testing. The role requires strong communication skills, flexibility, and a commitment to UCSF's values and service standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Assessment and Care
- Monitor and observe patients' physical and emotional condition.
- Recognize and report unusual symptoms to providers.
- Participate in emergency situations and understand use of emergency equipment.
Patient Care Implementation and Evaluation
- Provide direct care including injections, wound care, ear irrigations, phlebotomy, and POCT.
- Set up and maintain exam rooms; ensure infection control protocols are followed.
- Document all care and patient interactions in the electronic medical record (ApeX).
- Administer medications while maintaining knowledge of pharmacology.
Coordination and Communication
- Manage patient flow, clinical in-basket messages, and phone triage.
- Participate in daily team huddles and support continuity of care.
- Provide culturally sensitive communication and support to patients and families.
- Act as a liaison between patients, families, and the clinical team.
Patient Education and Advocacy
- Assess patient educational needs and provide health teaching.
- Use UCSF and community resources for patient referrals and support.
- Promote informed decision-making through clear communication and health coaching.
Quality Improvement and Professional Development
- Participate in Patient-Centered Medical Home initiatives and performance improvement projects.
- Attend training and maintain current certifications and licensure.
- Mentor new staff and contribute to team development.
- Ensure compliance with safety, infection control, and quality standards.

Department Description UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications

- Current California LVN license
- Current AHA CPR certification
- Three years of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse
- EPIC experience
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Computer/keyboarding proficiency
- Flexibility to work at various UCSF clinic sites

- Spanish, Chinese, or Russian language proficiency
- Experience applying Lean principles in a healthcare setting

License/Certification
- Active Licensed Vocational Nurse licensure in the State of California
- Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
