Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $100,000 to $120,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $85,400 to $156,800/year.

Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under the general direction of the Director, the Associate Director of Summer Sessions serves as the chief administrative officer for Summer Sessions, providing strategic leadership and high-level management across all administrative and operational functions. As a key member of the senior management team, this position directly supervises 4.0 FTE and closely collaborates with all staff in the Summer Sessions office. The incumbent leverages extensive experience in administrative operations, personnel management, and project management to lead all summer sessions personnel. The Associate Director leads all project management and collaborative team functions for the office, including supervision and close collaboration with business and finance, curriculum planning, student services, marketing, and academic programs. Is also responsible for building and maintaining strong, collaborative relationships across campus, specifically with admissions, registrar, financial aid, business services, information technology, student affairs, academic department business officers, and various similar positions. Uses a high degree of judgment, discretion, and independence, along with the ability to resolve complex issues through in-depth knowledge of campus, state, and federal protocols and policies. Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- 4-6 years of experience in the management and supervision of staff.
- 4-6 years of experience in management preferably in higher education.
- A high degree of autonomy, problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong skills in organizational project management.
- Strong skills in quickly evaluating complex issues and identifying multiple options for resolution.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to motivate/encourage all levels of staff.
- Proven skills in data analysis and reporting techniques, identifying data sources, reporting on trends, and ability to conduct, commission, and evaluate ad hoc studies
- Knowledgeable and comfortable with cloud-based technologies.
- Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
- Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
- Operative knowledge of marketing and marketing research and analytics.
- Broad knowledge of current information technology trends in education.
- Broad knowledge of the continuing education industry, best practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in related area or 5 years of equivalent experience / training.
- 1-3 years of demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, and experience building relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
- Proven skills in working collaboratively with others across UCSB and UC-wide locations.
- Broad knowledge of UCSB's processes, protocols, and procedures with a general understanding of budget, academic and staff personnel management, and academic and staff personnel policy.
- Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs that are necessary to perform job duties, as well as working knowledge of general office software such as the MS Office Suite and Google Workspace applications.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 50% Daily Operational Management - Provides comprehensive oversight of all administrative operations for Summer Sessions, ensuring efficient, service-oriented practices within a collaborative and inclusive environment. Offers strategic leadership in operational planning, staffing and FTE management, financial oversight, human resources, and space planning. Leads the recruitment, training, and professional development of staff, fostering a cohesive team that leverages technical and interpersonal skills to support dynamic, high-quality programming and services for students and the broader campus community. In close partnership with the Director, assumes a key leadership role in setting financial and operational goals, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and managing human, financial, physical, and technological resources. Advises the Director and staff, providing institutional knowledge and continuity on departmental operations, policies, and practices. Develops and executes administrative strategies that align with and advance the department's mission, vision, and programmatic objectives. Establishes and maintains procedures to implement Summer Sessions policies, programs, and outreach efforts. Applies in-depth knowledge of University, State, and Federal regulations to ensure full compliance and efficient operations. Exercises sound judgment in complex decision-making and problem-solving, and cultivates strong, collaborative relationships with academic and administrative units across UCSB.
- 30% Personnel Management - Staff Personnel: Directs and manages the Administrative Operations team, including career, limited, and student staff. Leads staffing analysis, recruitment, training, performance management, and professional development. Provides guidance to functional area supervisors on University policies, procedures, and labor agreements. Represents the department in grievances and labor relations. Oversees staffing structure and adjustments as needed. Direct reports include: the Student Services Manager, Academic Personnel & Curriculum Analyst, Business & Finance Manager, and the Marketing & Communication Coordinator.
- 20% Strategic Initiatives Development & Management - Partners closely with the Director to support strategic initiatives and inform programmatic decisions. Summer Sessions is an innovative office charged with creating and building new academic and academic affiliated programs. Serves as a thought partner to the Director, and may lead the brainstorming, development, and/or implementation of innovative programs. Specifically, the Associate Director is responsible for directing and communicating the implementation of such programs within the Summer Sessions teams, plus coordinating with various campus departmental staff to initiative and implement the programs. This may also include collaboration and/or negotiation with third party vendors, other UC campuses, or other institutions of higher learning.
