The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Neurology is seeking an hourly Temporary Professional Employee to support the adult and pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) via digital electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment and audiovisual (AV) equipment for the months of July and August 2025. This position is responsible for independently monitoring patients, initiating and terminating EMU studies, ensuring studies are recorded, and maintaining the quality of the recordings. The professional employee will be trained to identify clinical and electrographic events during the studies and respond appropriately, notifying personnel as needed. Additionally, this position assists higher-level staff in the performance of duties as assigned. Job Duties to include:
- Prepares area and materials for patient testing in the adult and pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
- Performs routine technical measurements using specialized medical equipment (EEG/AV) to determine changing conditions of a patient
- Records EMU studies with audiovisual and EEG equipment, ensures quality of recordings, and maintains information obtained during recordings to facilitate interpretation of the data and meet established equipment review guidelines/protocols.
- Identifies clinical and electrographic events and responds appropriately
- Distributes information to appropriate areas and personnel
- Assists with collecting equipment/electrodes upon patient discharge
- Maintains event log for each patient
- Performs routine maintenance of equipment to ensure operational condition at all times
- Troubleshoots EEG/AV equipment and electrodes as necessary
- Assists in training new personnel to operate and maintain EEG/AV equipment
- Assembles emergency trays and accessory equipment
- Escorts patients to examination rooms
- Assists higher-level staff in performance of their duties as assigned.
Percent of time: This position could be scheduled up to 40 hours/week for the months of July 2025 and August 2025. Exact schedule will be determined with supervisor after hire. Schedule: Typical shifts range between 4 hours and 12 hours, depending on unit need. Scheduled shifts may be on rotating weekdays, including weekends, evenings, and/or overnight hours. - Health care experience involving direct patient care.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
