Summary:

The AVP - Commercial Portfolio Manager II plays a critical role in supporting the commercial lending process by conducting in-depth financial analysis, managing credit risk, and ensuring the quality and timeliness of underwriting activities. This position partners closely with Relationship Managers and the Credit Department to manage a portfolio of commercial loans, including annual reviews, renewals, covenant monitoring, and construction loan oversight. The AVP - Commercial Portfolio Manager II also assists in structuring new credit opportunities, preparing deal summaries, and supporting the loan closing process. Additionally, the role involves direct customer interaction, portfolio compliance monitoring, and collaboration on credit-related projects and audits. This position requires strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of commercial credit, and the ability to work independently while mentoring junior team members. This position is on-site at our executive offices in Holyoke, MA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Credit Administration Functions:

  • Proactively gather financial and business information from lenders and borrowers to ensure timely completion of annual reviews and renewals across assigned portfolios.
  • Analyze financial statements and draft insightful loan comments, including preliminary assessments of credit quality, cash flow, and covenant compliance, support strategic responses to covenant breaches.
  • Oversee construction loan disbursements, ensuring strict adherence to internal policies, budgets, and regulatory documentation requirements.
  • Diligently monitor and resolve financial and legal exceptions to maintain portfolio integrity.

Customer Engagement & Relationship Support:

  • Serve as a reliable secondary point of contact for borrowers, delivering responsive and solution-oriented support in the lender's absence.
  • Collaborate with lenders on new business opportunities by preparing for client meetings, participating in calls, and developing comprehensive deal summaries for senior leadership.
  • Manage the end-to-end credit process-from initial assessment through closing-by coordinating with internal teams, legal counsel, and third-party vendors to ensure all underwriting conditions are met.
  • Attend loan closings to gain hands-on experience with legal documentation and assist in preparing post-closing commentary.
  • Expand loan collection expertise by monitoring delinquencies, initiating customer outreach, and participating in resolution strategies alongside lenders.
  • Prepare quarterly watched asset reports and contribute to portfolio risk management efforts.
  • Identify and refer cross-sell opportunities to enhance client relationships and support business growth.
  • May be designated as a subject matter expert in a specific industry, providing strategic insights and managing a specialized portfolio.

Portfolio Analysis & Risk Management:

  • Partner with senior leadership on strategic portfolio initiatives, including industry analysis, interest rate risk assessments, and stress testing.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to verify borrower compliance with loan terms and conditions.
  • Collaborate with Credit and Lending teams to address audit and examination findings, ensuring timely resolution of exceptions.
  • Develop white papers and internal reports on key lending sectors and emerging credit risks.
  • Prepare high-quality credit packages for renewals, annual reviews, new loan requests, and watched assets.
  • Continuously monitor portfolio compliance, including financial covenant testing and timely receipt of financial statements.
  • Mentor and support Credit Analysts, promoting accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to lending policies.

Complete all yearly compliance training and testing, and comply with bank, federal, and state regulations. Adhere to Bank Policies and Procedures and departmental and bank-wide service standards.

Perform related duties as required.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 4 years of related experience and/or training
  • This role is generally considered a progression from the Portfolio Manager I position, typically requiring 1-2 years of relevant experience in that capacity

Computer/Technical Skills / Certifications:

  • MS Office 365, including Word and Excel
  • Ability to adapt to and learn other software used by the Credit Department and Bank

Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated experience underwriting a diverse range of credit types, including commercial real estate and commercial & industrial (C&I) loans.
  • Proven ability to maintain strong credit quality through timely, accurate, and thorough credit administration.
  • Skilled in structuring and documenting new loan transactions, with a keen ability to identify credit weaknesses and mitigate potential risks.
  • Capable of working independently while also mentoring and supporting junior team members.
  • Well-versed in regulatory requirements and internal loan policies governing commercial lending.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
