POSITION TYPE: Permanent part-time, 12-month, SHRA, FLSA Non-exempt, 0.75 FTE (30 hours/week)
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $39,546 - $39,856
Hiring salary will be determined based on education, experience, equity, budget, and market considerations.

Description of Duties:
The Physics Lab Manager is responsible for consulting with Physics faculty and the Physics Chair regarding needs for setting up, taking down, and putting away lab and demonstration equipment on a daily basis. Responsibilities include: setup, takedown, organization and storage of all instructional laboratory and demonstration equipment; maintenance of an up-to-date inventory of equipment and yearly chemical inventory; maintenance and minor repair of equipment; proctoring of student assessments and support for student research. This position will provide a central resource for information regarding location of materials and operating manuals for equipment. This position will train high school students in basic lab safety practices and supervise high school students to assist with the daily work load. This work, which is essential to lab safety, must be performed in-person on site in Durham. This is a 0.75 position with benefits and the daily schedule is 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. This position reports to the Dean of Science.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge-Technical: Specific knowledge in the area of science related to the research project(s) essential to perform a variety of procedures. Knowledge and ability to independently operate instrumentation, equipment and/or software used for research objectives.
Operations-Research Support: Ability to perform and/or assist in specialized research procedures, tests,
minor animal surgery and/or agricultural practices. For example, ability to perform molecular and biochemical procedures, protein purification, in vitro enzyme analyses, artificial insemination procedures, and care of gnotobiotic animals. Ability to independently prepare and maintain the layout of the subject environment. Ability to calculate appropriate quantities of chemical(s) to ensure they are properly mixed and applied.
Data Collection: Ability to identify and report variations or discrepancies in the data; ability to organize and prepare data for analyses. Ability to provide preliminary summary of experiments, procedures and tests.
Laboratory/Subject Care: Ability to administer specialized medications or chemical treatments
according to established protocols; ability to monitor and report study subject reactions. Ability to ensure
compliance with sanitation and safety procedures by others. Ability to independently perform minor repairs and operate equipment and instruments in support of research laboratory, field, or clinical programs. Ability to identify, track and report variations or discrepancies in inventory used in laboratory; may require ability to distribute supplies. Ability to coordinate tests, procedures and experiments with ancillary units.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School Diploma and two years of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties.
Preferred Education and Experience - Undergraduate degree or higher in Physics, Engineering or Astronomy; or Associate degree and two years of directly related experience.
Lab experience in academia or industry;
Physics lab experience;
Knowledge of physics demonstration devices is strongly preferred;
Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with students and faculty;
Must be able to work with Microsoft Office Suite or G Suite software.
