We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Collector to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for negotiating payment plans, and ensuring timely collection of debts. This role requires strong communication skills, a solid understanding of financial processes, and the ability to maintain professionalism while dealing with clients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned. The Credit Union reserves the right to modify, amend, or eliminate the described functions, tasks, and responsibilities of this position at any time when the circumstances warrant such a variation.


  • Obtains and reviews credit reports and skip trace reports.
  • Corrects LAFCU reporting errors on credit reports.
  • Communicates with members via electronic and traditional methods to encourage payment of delinquent accounts, formulate a method of repayment, and determine reason for delinquency.
  • Communicates with members within given communication channel in an attempt to determine reason for overdue payment, or negative share, and reviews terms of credit contract and/or membership agreement with member.
  • Records detailed information about the financial status of member and status of collection efforts.
  • Detects the need for and recommends the use of budget counseling to members.
  • Recommends repossession or legal action.
  • Maintains records on repossessions and prepares various documents for repossessed collateral.
  • Assists in auction of unredeemed repossessed collateral.
  • Sorts, scans and files correspondence.
  • Receives payments and posts amount paid to member's accounts including charged off accounts.
  • Grants extensions of credit.
  • Negotiates and establishes repayment process within the defined guidelines.
  • Processes collateral protection insurance and other products.
  • Reviews records and transactions to resolve/reverse misapplied payments and ensure that payments are properly credited.
  • May represent Credit Union during legal proceedings.
  • Receives information from Credit Union departments, other financial institutions and law enforcement agencies.
  • Confers with attorney and other vendors for Collecction efforts, including obtaining judgments and to pursue other appropriate legal action.
  • Maintain individual delinquency within guidelines and/or policy.
  • Calculates debt ratios and loan values.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); minimum one year Collection experience within the last 5 years, or 5 years of experience in Consumer Lending practices and procedures and real estate lending, including, but not limited to skip tracing, foreclosures, and demonstrates general knowledge of collection procedures, bankruptcy law, and applicable regulations, including, but not limited to Reg Z, ECOA, Service Members'Civil Relief Act, BSA, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Fair Credit Reporting Act., eligible for NMLS certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to members and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of using PC, including, but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel; demonstrated ability to relate to members/customers and co-workers in a professional manner, demonstrated commitment to member service; ability to accept and perform duties efficiently and accurately; ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions and recommendations based upon level of responsibility; a positive attitude and dependability are required.
