About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute significantly to the design and development of the battery and vehicle's high voltage (HV) bus system. This includes proof of concept, requirement definition, design, analysis/simulation, and validation of HV architectural strategies.
  • Adapt HV electrical systems for various battery platforms.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis and optimization of HV bus behavior from the perspective of capacitance, inductance, and resistance. Aim to characterize and optimize for current/voltage ripple, mitigate electromagnetic interference (EMI)/electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues, and ensure robust operational performance.
  • Design high voltage systems that adhere to and surpass established safety standards and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Perform comprehensive Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs), hazard analyses, and risk assessments.
  • Evaluate, select, and integrate HV components such as contactors, fuses, and current sensors to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Lead root cause analysis efforts and provide expert support for high voltage system related issues during development, validation, and production phases.
  • Collaborate closely with battery pack design engineers, high voltage component engineers, drive unit engineers, and software teams to achieve seamless integration and optimal performance of the high voltage system.
  • Support comprehensive test plans for high voltage components and systems, including design verification testing, performance validation, and reliability testing.
  • Implement lessons learned into future high voltage battery designs to enhance product quality and performance.
  • Support and drive the HV battery technology roadmap from an HV architecture and component perspective
  • Transition between high level and component focused engineering tasks as needed.
  • Adapt to dynamic development timelines and collaborate across disciplines to ensure timely task completion.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of work experience in Battery/Automotive/Aerospace/related industries
  • At least a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Hands-on experience in HV DC system design and analysis, especially in automotive or high power applications
  • Expert in High Voltage safety principles: isolation monitoring, arc flash mitigation, touch potential
  • Familiarity with FMVSS 305, UN38.3, ECE R100, and other safety and regulatory standards
  • Strong comprehension of the electrical interfaces and interactions between the HV battery pack and the broader vehicle's HV architecture
  • Knowledge of HV contactor selection, control strategies, and fault protection
  • Deep knowledge of parasitic effects - i.e. how capacitance and inductance impact HV bus performance, including transients, ripple current, and resonance
  • Creating the requirements from the ground up, using engineering analysis and simulation tools such as SPICE and/or Matlab/Simulink
  • Familiarity with structured problem solving techniques
  • Strong communication, multitasking, and interpersonal skills, both in presentation and technical writing
  • Versed with automated requirements management tools (e.g. JAMA, Doors, etc.) and issue tracking tools (Jira, Bugzilla, etc.)
  • Nice to have: Direct experience with the design, development, or integration of high-voltage traction inverters and their interaction with the HV bus
