New Hanover County is looking for a Household Hazardous Waste Program Coordinator
to join our Recycling & Solid Waste Department. This position performs responsible work managing the collection, processing, storage, and shipment of electronic and household hazardous waste. Oversees three Household Hazardous Waste Program Assistants.
Responsibilities for this role include:
- Supervises employees to include prioritizing and assigning work; scheduling shifts, conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
- Processes, stores, ships electronic and household hazardous waste.
- Prepare chemicals, batteries, CFLs, and fluorescent tubes for shipping: and stack crates and barrels for transport.
- Ensures that users of the facility receive excellent customer service and the facility is maintained in compliance with state law and permits requirements.
- Manages an operation budget.
- Analyzes data in order to determine inventory trigger points that require coordination for supply delivery or shipment of prepared materials.
- Performs inspections, record-keeping and reporting to comply with permit conditions.
- Assists with public outreach and education.
- Conducts a weekly safety walk-through of the facility and identifies and corrects any potential hazards.
- Coordinates a mobile Household Hazardous Waste program serving multiple sites on a routine basis.
- Maintains a record of the weight of all materials collected to measure effectiveness of the program.
- Monitors and maintains the cleanliness of the facility.
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance; consistently meets the scheduling needs as required by the county.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of customer service techniques; flammable materials; basic waste disposal and recycling guidelines; basic heavy equipment maintenance techniques (in above lead worker position, advanced techniques); mechanical concepts (in above lead worker position, advanced mechanical concepts); and safety requirements; heavy equipment, office equipment, and NC DEQ permit requirements. Skilled in analyzing data, record-keeping, inventory management, logistics, budget management, permit compliance and public outreach and education. Must be able to operate heavy equipment such as trucks and forklifts
Located in coastal southeastern North Carolina, the New Hanover County Recycling & Solid Waste Department oversees one of the state's most advanced integrated solid waste disposal systems. The Department operates a recycling drop-off collection system, a Household Hazardous Waste and electronic waste collection system, a RCRA Subtitle D landfill, Construction and Demolition Debris (C&D) diversion, and yard waste passive composting operations. The resulting system minimizes the use of land resources consumed for burying the waste we generate and minimizes the potential risks for contaminating the area's delicate environment.

Hours:
7am - 3:30pm Mon-Fri with rotating Saturdays, and may be required to work on certain holidays.
Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.
Employment Type: Full time, non-exempt
Salary Information:
The hiring range for this position starts at $48,678 annually, plus a competitive benefits package.
Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two years of experience related to the program area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
- The ability to operate a forklift and pick-up truck.
Physical Requirements:
- Standing for most hours in an outdoor work environment with exposure to various types of weather/elements
- Frequent heavy lifting of at least 50 lbs.
- The work is typically performed in an environment where the employee may be exposed to varying temperature and/or weather conditions as well as varying degrees of distractions, conditions and/or chemicals and/or waste which requires the employee to pay attention to one's own safety as well as that of customers and citizens served.

- Valid Driver's License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
- SWANA HHW/CESQG Certification within six months of hire date of employment.
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPR Certification within six months of hire date of employment.
