The Critical Care physician assistant or nurse practitioner is a core member of the BWFH Intensive Care unit team. The APP is responsible for assisting Critical Care attending physicians in the management of ICU patients and to work in the context of an integrated team which includes attendings, students, and nurses. Candidates in the position should have a strong background and acute care and bedside procedures.
The APP works closely with the ICU physicians and nursing staff to develop and coordinate a plan of care designed to meet the physical, psychological, and social needs of patients and their families. Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are required. Knowledge of current literature and a commitment to continue learning are also required. Essential Functions
Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.

Education

Master's Degree Physician Assistant required

Licenses and Credentials

Massachusetts Physician Assistant or Acute Care NP required

Experience

Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.

Ability to maintain quality control standards.

Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.

Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
