Overview:

We're seeking a hands-on technician experienced in both Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) systems and cryogenics who will focus on the operation and maintenance of large-scale helium liquefaction systems and cryomodules within the accelerator complex.

This position resides in the Superconducting Linac Systems Group in the Accelerator Systems Section, Research Accelerator Division,Neutron Sciences DirectorateatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a Central Helium Liquefier Specialist coordinating operations activities.
  • Perform cryomodule repair and maintenance activities.
  • Participate in the cryomodule refurbishment program restoring original cryomodules to a specified performance.
  • Respond to alarms and abnormal events when called in.
  • Mentors other staff members to enrich the body of knowledge within the SCL Systems Group.
  • Performs training presentations related to systems they specialize in.
  • Attend design reviews and give input to design staff.
  • Review Failure Modes and Effect Analysis with staff members to continually improve systems.
  • Under supervision of project staff, assembles, tests, certifies, and documents SNS linac cryogenic components.
  • Assists with component assembly and commissioning of the helium refrigerator, cryomodule, and superconducting radio frequency facility.
  • Observe, document, and communicate designs, methods, materials, and equipment required for the operations, assembly, and development processes.
  • Sets up and operates process and test equipment and apparatus.
  • Uses electronic and mechanical test and measurement equipment to verify system function and integrity; uses computers to collect, record, and analyze data for acceptance.
  • Develops and maintains documentation and procedures for fabricating, testing, and operating equipment.
  • May provide work direction to trades/crafts for successful component fabrication, assembly, and installation.
  • Ensures compliance with ESH and quality procedures and programs. May participate in the development and communication of safety and quality procedures.
  • Primarily works day shift with occasional alternate and some weekend shifts.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An AS degree in mechanical technology or related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience (a high school diploma with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience will also be considered).
  • Experience in cryogenics or Superconducting Radiofrequency.
  • Experience with high-vacuum systems and cleanroom techniques.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be willing to learn new skills and train others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a clean production environment, using mechanical and electronic test and measurement equipment, preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:

For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
