PRIMARY FUNCTION To serve as a firefighter assigned to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity engaged in airfield and structural firefighting and crash-rescue operations and assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Performs crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. * Performs structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes. * Performs prefire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems. * As a crew member, participates in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating hoses, ladders, and hydrants. * Participates in regular training and exercises as required. * Performs rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical facility. * Engages in hazardous materials containment and control as a first responder. * Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. Performs functional tests and inspections. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and housekeeping duties associated with assigned facilities. * Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment. * Drives and operates firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, Mobile Water Supply (MWS), and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles. * Operates pumps, foam generators, boom and groundsweep nozzles, and other similar equipment. * Determines proper pressures, the number of lines, and relays requirements to the booster pumper. * When operating a crash truck, maneuvers vehicle to keep the fire in optimum range while ensuring that backflash will not occur. * Performs crash/rescue and firefighting duties at airfields handling predominantly large or complex aircraft (e.g. fighters, bombers, cargo, and passenger). SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will have no direct reports. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: * Knowledge of basic and specialized firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, and identification. * Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy; and of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordnance placement, and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply systems. * Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders. * Skill in operating communications equipment. * Ability to lift and carry heavy loads; and to apply emergency first aid techniques. * Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity; of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc; and of basic and specialized firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures. * Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy; and of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordnance placement, and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply systems. * Knowledge to apply emergency first aid techniques; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders. * Skill in operating communications equipment; and in detecting and recognizing fire hazards (potential and immediate). * Ability to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity; and to apply emergency first aid techniques. * Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program. * Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management. * The employee is subject to work a 40 hour week with a possibility for overtime. The employee is required to work a 24 hour shift, as required, based on the employer's needs, which includes weekends and holidays. * This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing. * This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. * The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required. * Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. * May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT). * May be required to perform duties associated with the operation of aircraft arresting barrier equipment. QUALIFICATIONS: Employee is required to be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification System with minimum of 4 years' experience as: * Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II). * HAZMAT Awareness, and HAZMAT Operations. * Apparatus Driver Operator- Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF). * Apparatus Driver Operator- Pumper * Apparatus Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply (MWS) preferred. Must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire. * Emergency Medical Technician preferred. Must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire. * Must be able to pass a firefighter based Medical Physical and Physical Agility Test. * Must be able to meet National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) vision standard; uncorrected vision of 20/100 or better and corrected vision of 20/40 or better. * Possess a valid State driver's license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Tunista's Driving Policy. * Must pass drug, background and driver's record screening. * Must be fully vaccinated for Covid at the time of hire or be able to receive a religious or medical exemption.
