POSITION SPECIFICS

The Animal Diagnostic Lab/Martins Lab in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Penn State seeks to hire afull-time Research Technologist to join the Martins lab team focused on developing and improving viral diagnostic assays and viral vaccines. This position involves various laboratory tasks in classical and molecular virology, including cell culture, working with recombinant viruses, and occasionally participating in animal experiments. The successful candidate will also maintain laboratory equipment, manage lab supplies, and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures. Training on all tasks related to this position will be provided.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform laboratory assays in classical and molecular virology.

  • Work with cell cultures and viruses.

  • Participate in chicken and turkey experiments.

  • Ensure equipment is functioning correctly and maintain laboratory inventory.

  • Work with attention to detail, strong time management, and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Assist with surge testing diagnostic needs, including occasional after-hours or holiday work when required.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

    Bachelor's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

    Preferred experience and skills:

    • Work experience in a virology research lab or animal science-related fields.
    • Knowledge of basic scientific and veterinary medical terminology, laboratory safety, and quality control procedures.
    • Proficiency in microbiological techniques, including aseptic techniques, and record-keeping skills.
    • Experience with genome sequencing or animal experiments is a plus.

    Additional Information:

    • Rabies vaccination and biennial titer checks are strongly recommended and will be covered by the laboratory.

    SALARY & BENEFITS

    The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $38,300.00 - $55,500.00.
