THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's (PHMC) Division of Architecture and Preservation is eager to welcome a meticulous Preservation Construction Specialist to the team. This position will afford you the opportunity to utilize your construction skills and knowledge of traditional building materials and techniques for the conservation of the historic buildings managed by PHMC. Showcase your specialized skill set while preserving Pennsylvania heritage for generations to come.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role you will survey the needs for preservation work at historic sites and museums. You will perform preservation trades work, such as carpentry, painting, roofing and masonry, to address urgent preservation project needs. You will be expected to apply the best current procedures and protocols to insure that all construction work meets agency standards for preservation and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.(36 CRF 67) You will have the opportunity to provide preservation trade skills training and mentoring for assigned seasonal apprentices as well as technical assistance to site maintenance staff.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 60-minute lunch.
  • Occasional overnight travel required
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Architectural History, American History, Historic Preservation, Architectural Conservation or a similar field; and two years of experience in historic preservation construction work which has directly involved hands-on construction work in the restoration or preservation of historic buildings in one or more skilled trades; or
  • Two years of post-secondary education and training in the above designated fields of study and four years of experience in historic preservation construction work which has directly involved hands-on construction work in the restoration or preservation of historic buildings in one or more skilled trades; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that includes two years of experience in historic preservation construction work which has directly involved hands-on construction work in the restoration or preservation of historic buildings in one or more skilled trades.

Additional Requirements:

  • This particular position requires possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
