Civil Engineering Intern - Highway Design (Summer 2026)

Position Overview:

As an intern on our Highway Team, you'll gain hands-on experience in the planning and design of transportation projects. You'll work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to real-world projects that impact communities, including two of the region's most transformative initiatives: the I-81 Viaduct Project and the Onondaga County/Micron Transportation Improvements, projects that will redefine mobility and connectivity in Central New York.

Position Responsibilities:

• Assist in highway/roadway design using MicroStation/AutoCAD, following NYSDOT and AASHTO standards.
• Perform engineering calculations for alignments, grading, drainage, and other design elements.
• Support preparation of construction plans, technical details, and cost estimates.
• Contribute to traffic control plans, pavement markings, and signage layouts.
• Participate in design reviews and occasional field visits to observe existing conditions or assist with construction support.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field; completion of sophomore year preferred.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other 3D modeling/design software.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Interest in transportation/highway design and willingness to learn industry standards and practices.
• Previous internship experience or involvement in related student organizations is a plus.

Estimated Compensation Range: $20.00-$22.50/hour*

*Actual compensation may vary based on prior internship experience, current academic year, degree program, certifications, and geographical location.
