Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Supervising Chemist for the department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The primary purpose of a Supervising Chemist is to perform and assist with the coordination of complex chemical analyses and associated research in the Trace Metals Testing Laboratories.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Under the supervision of the Inorganic Chemistry Program Manager this position will prepare food and consumer products samples for toxic metals testing, analyze them for toxic metals by Inductively Couple Plasma Mass Spectrometry, and prepare and or coordinate the preparation of all necessary reports to clients and grantors.
  • Provides supervision and mentoring of analysts performing work in a chemical analysis laboratory unit.
  • Coordinate and oversee research efforts pertaining to food and consumer products, testing for toxic metals, and take the lead on the preparation of associated publications.
  • Performs and recommends the hiring, firing, training, performance recognition/assessment, discipline, timekeeping, record keeping, policy implementation, promoting and other personnel actions.
  • Prepares scientific papers for publication, participates in scientific meetings and conferences and serves on scientific committees.
  • Supervises, conducts performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, coaches, counsels and motivates staff to achieve peak productivity and performance. Maintains working knowledge and hands-on experience with tests in the unit to ensure continuity of operation.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master of Science degree in chemistry or other appropriate physical or environmental science discipline plus three (3) years of experience in chemical analysis or research. OR Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry or other appropriate physical or environmental science discipline plus 4 years.
  • Three (3) years of experience in chemical analysis or research; one (1) year of which must be in the operation of the gas chromatography mass spectrometer, gas chromatograph, high performance liquid chromatograph, fourier transform mass spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, atomic absorption spectrometer, x-ray defractor, transmission electron microscope, or updated replacement thereof.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical Demands: Position requires standing, walking, sitting, use of the hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms over 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl under 1/3 of the time. Position requires lifting 1/3 of the time up to 10 pounds, and under 1/3 of the time up to 25 pounds.
  • Work Environment: Moderate noise environment with some exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to blood borne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment; some potential exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to hazardous waste.

  • Candidate must successfully complete a Criminal Background Check, which includes fingerprinting performed by the State of New Jersey Department of Health.
