About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated Operations Manager to oversee and coordinate all aspects of facility operations. Reporting to the Facility Manager, this role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment and systems, with a focus on performance, compliance, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate brings hands-on operational experience, leadership capabilities, and the ability to manage both routine and emergency plant activities. This role is essential to maintaining compliance with technical standards and environmental regulations while fostering a high-performance operations team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities of operations personnel.
  • Establish priorities for repair work, maintenance, and operational tasks.
  • Plan and schedule outages in coordination with the Maintenance Manager.
  • Respond to plant issues, including unscheduled outages and operational upsets.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction during unusual operating conditions.
  • Conduct or participate in studies to improve plant operations and equipment reliability.
  • Review and update plant manuals and procedures as needed.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with applicable regulations, technical standards, and safety protocols.
  • Recruit, interview, and select operations team members.
  • Lead onboarding and initial training of new operators.
  • Oversee ongoing training and development programs for staff to promote safety, efficiency, and career progression.
  • Ensure operators are prepared to handle emergencies safely and effectively.
  • Work closely with other department leads, including Maintenance, EH&S, and Engineering.
  • Support internal and external audits related to operational performance and compliance.
  • Communicate clearly with management regarding plant status, risks, and improvement opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a supervisory or mid-level operations management role.
  • Minimum of 5 years in mass-burn/resource recovery or fossil-fuel electric generation operations.
  • Proven leadership in managing plant operations, outages, and technical troubleshooting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; engineering degree or utility-based training preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of safety standards, environmental regulations, and operational procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Certifications

  • ASME Provisional Resource Recovery Operator Certification (preferred or ability to obtain).
  • Chief Operator CT Certificate for a Class 1 Resource Recovery Facility (or ability to obtain).

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work in all areas of the plant under varying environmental conditions (heat, cold, noise, dust, and wet areas).
  • Ability to wear a respirator, work from heights using fall protection, and perform manual labor, including lifting, pushing, pulling, sweeping, and shoveling.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and access tight or elevated spaces.
  • This is a smoke-free worksite.
