Professor Finn Kydland, Jeffrey Henley Professor of Economics and Nobel Laureate, directs the institute, in conjunction with an advisory board comprised of leading international macroeconomists. LAEF programs foster collaboration and communication across the discipline of Macroeconomics, engaging and inviting top scholars to collaborate on selected topics pioneering new research in the discipline of Macroeconomics.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the general direction of the Director, the Business Manager oversees a broad range of administrative operations for the Laboratory for Aggregate Economics and Finance (LAEF). Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced administrative operations professional to manage, plan and administer the operations of LAEF. Exercises discretionary powers to solve managerial and program problems. Performs short and long-term planning for the organization, including program planning and assessments, budget analysis and control, space planning, and special projects. Serves as a resource to the Director in the planning of LAEF's activities which includes research programs, workshops, and conferences. Demonstrates good judgment to anticipate needs and select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Serves as the visible and primary business representative of LAEF. Oversees IT support for LAEF.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 1-3 years Relevant experience in business administration, finance, and/or management.
  • 1-3 years Financial administration experience, including fund accounting.
  • 1-3 years Experience in event coordination.
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting concepts, adhering to policies and procedure.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff verbally and in writing.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Working knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preferred Master's Degree
  • Familiarity with UCSB policies and procedures related to accounting, budgets, payroll, procurement, and Academic Personnel.
  • Broad knowledge of UCSB financial applications, such as Gateway, Concur, UCPath, Kronos, Expresso Financial, Data Warehouse, online travel, etc.
  • Broad knowledge of UCSB Academic Personnel applications, such as UC Recruit and AP Folio.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 50% Operations Management - Manages, plans, and administers a broad range of administrative operations for LAEF. Administrative operations include budgetary financial management, program management, event management, IT, space planning/facilities, and development/fundraising. Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarize s recommendations for financial/resource plans in addition to a wide range of topics. Develops and recommends long- and short-term operational goals. Performs varied and complex research to support the program and financial management recommendations and feasibility analyses. Develops internal policies and procedures to ensure appropriate internal controls and safeguarding of university assets. Advises on and interpret policies pertaining to business and finance, personnel, and campus policies. Prepares reports and documents for the Director's signature. Represents LAEF operations to the campus community, university committees, and external international academic community. Serves as the business officer for LAEF with central campus offices. Provides oversight, decision-making and guidance to the development of the website to inform the public and visitors. Oversees IT support for LAEF. Supervises temporary, part-time and/or student employees.
  • 40% Program Planning - Performs short- and long-term planning for LAEF programs. Plans, implements, and establishes policy and procedural framework for high-profile international research workshops and conferences/symposia hosted at on-site and off-site non-UC facilities. Manages logistical, policy, legal, and risk issues in planning workshops and conferences/symposia. Negotiates with vendors and/or campus services for logistical arrangements and risk management. Negotiates financial agreements for visiting researchers. Prepares cost-sharing budgets and related materials for off-site hosted programs. Accountable for fiscal outcomes of programs. Conducts periodic program assessments. Oversees the compilation, contributions, and production and publication of the proceedings of the conferences to the larger academic world, representing both LAEF and UCSB to the international academic community. Provides and maintains website presence, including updates for events, news, announcements, etc.
  • 10% Development - Develops LAEF framework for private gift support to fund the on-going operation of the institute. Serves as the liaison for major gift prospects in accordance with development of private gift support vis-a-vis LAEF. Represents LAEF at public and University events that may have an impact on the funding and visibility of the institute. Develops network of professional contacts that may have a current or future development interest with LAEF. Evaluates development efforts with respect to long-term goals of LAEF.
