The Division of Rehabilitation Medicine within the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is recruiting a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician to join our faculty to assume a leadership role as the Section Chief of Inpatient PM&R. The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UW-Madison is comprised of 13 faculty, 9 advanced practice providers, 10 residents and 2 fellows within the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, which includes 61 faculty and 50 advanced practice providers in 8 subspecialty divisions/sections, 8 fellows across 5 fellowship programs and 40 residents between 2 residency programs. The division enjoys strong collaborative relationships with faculty in the Department of Pediatrics Division of Developmental Pediatrics & Rehabilitation Medicine.

The Inpatient Section of PM&R is rapidly growing, particularly through the building and operation of a second joint venture (with UW Health, UnityPoint Health - Meriter and Lifepoint Rehabilitation) free-standing 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital within Dane County, which will bring the overall capacity to 90 inpatient beds between both facilities. Significant growth opportunity also includes inpatient PM&R consultation services at UW Health hospitals and UnityPoint Health-Meriter. Additional programmatic growth opportunities within stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and general neurorehabilitation also exist.


  • This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.

  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

  • Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles: Assistant Professor (CHS), Associate Professor (CHS), Professor (CHS), Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.


In partnership with the Vice Chair for the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Chair of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, duties for this position include but are not limited to:


  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for growth and development of the inpatient section of PM&R across all missions (clinical, teaching, research and service).

  • Provide leadership of physicians and advanced practice providers to ensure collaboration between each role and consistency across various sites of care.

  • Fulfill duties of the site-specific Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital Medical Director role. Provide sectional leadership to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital Medical Director for partner inpatient hospital.

  • Support the advancement of division faculty on all academic tracks

  • Foster and further develop collaboration with physician leadership and faculty colleagues from other collaborating departments and divisions, particularly Hospital Medicine, Nephrology and Neurology.

  • Represent the section, division and department on various committee and administrative groups at both the university and health system level.


As a clinical faculty member:


  • Provide clinical care as a PM&R physician (inpatient, consultation, outpatient follow-up of inpatient discharge patients).

  • Teach medical students, residents and fellows (both through formal didactics as well as within the context of clinical practice setting).

  • Carry out independent scholarly activity in areas of interest

  • Participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of the division, department, School of Medicine and Public Health and UW Health.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least five years of independent Inpatient PM&R practice.

  • At least three years of formal physician leadership experience.

  • Experience in an academic medical setting.

  • WI Medical license by start date of position.

  • Board-certified or board eligible in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by start date of position.

  • Completion of a US ACGME-accredited Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency by the start date of the position.

  • Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges, by the start date of the position.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a joint venture clinical care organization.

  • Track record as an accomplished academic faculty physician within PM&R with demonstrated academic productivity (peer-reviewed publications, scholarly research activity.)

  • For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on CHS Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CHS Track.

  • For an appointment at Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor rank on CT Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CT Track.

MD or DO, or equivalent required
