Position Summary

The Department of Communication & Journalism at the University of New Mexico invites applications for an open rank at Assistant or Associate Professor in Intercultural Communication Studies with an emphasis on Race, Culture, and/or Indigenous Studies to begin August 10, 2026. This is a full-time, Tenure Track position in Communication Studies. Applicants must have a PhD in Communication Studies or a related field by start date of appointment. Applications must demonstrate evidence of potential to contribute to our department's core strength in Intercultural Communication but also with potential to support the department's Media emphasis. The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for developing a strong research program that will contribute to our department's commitment to understanding the complex relationship between communication and culture, particularly within our unique Southwest and international borderland context. Those appointed to the position will be expected to maintain a strong record of research in Communication Studies, teach courses each semester, and serve the department, college, and university. The new faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Intercultural Communication, supervise MA and PhD students (including comprehensive exams), and contribute to core, required undergraduate and graduate courses.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Communication Studies or closely related field by August 10, 2026
  • Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in Communication Studies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels
  • Potential to develop national or international research reputation for one's research program
  • Ability to mentor students at the graduate levels
  • Ability to contribute to Media Studies area in the department
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
