General Notes

The lateral police sergeant position is a commissioned peace officer assigned to the Investigations and Mitigation Division of the University of Texas Police Department.

Purpose

The sergeant will be responsible for supervising and leading detectives conducting investigations of criminal activity on and around the University of Texas at Austin campus.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise investigations of property crimes.
  • Supervise investigations of crimes against persons.
  • Manage and ensure the proper collection, preservation, and analysis of evidence.
  • Review and approve detailed reports and ensure accurate and complete case files are produced and maintained.
  • Monitor the interview suspects and witnesses.
  • Collaborate with outside agencies and external stakeholders.
  • Testify in court proceedings related to investigations in which the sergeant participated.
  • Monitor intelligence information and research situations to maintain situational awareness and assess risk.
  • May perform traditional law enforcement duties during special events. May include periods of on-call status.
Required Qualifications
  • Applicant must possess an Advanced TCOLE peace officer license. Comparable licenses from other states may be considered.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and are eligible to drive a university owned or leased vehicle.
  • Must have relevant experience assigned as a full-time law enforcement investigator and/or investigative supervisor for no less than 10 years, whether combined in both roles, or in either role separately, at a law enforcement agency of comparable size or larger.
  • Able to provide credible court testimony and present to grand juries with demonstrated proficiency in doing the same.
  • Have completed formal training and demonstrated successful practical application of techniques in interview/interrogation, investigative techniques, and development and execution of arrest and search warrants.
  • Experience in coordinating with district and county prosecutor's offices and coordinating investigations that involve multiple units or agencies.
  • Effective written and oral communications skills to include proficiency in common investigative platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years of experience assigned as a full time police investigative supervisor at a full service law enforcement agency.
  • Possess a Master peace officer license.
  • Possess a TCOLE Instructor certification.
  • Have working knowledge of open source investigations and threat assessment best practices.
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • 15 years of total investigative experience, including 7 or more years in a leadership role overseeing complex investigations.
  • Experience leading multi-agency or high profile investigations and coordinating with federal, state, and local partners.
  • Advanced training/certification in criminal investigations and forensic evidence analysis.
  • Experience developing investigative policies, mentoring investigators, enhancing case management systems or investigative efficiency.
Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$90,440 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift
  • Standard UT schedule, Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
