| Essential Job Duties |
The Intermediate Care (
IMC) department at the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center provides 24/7 progressive care for small animals and exotic patients from all specialty services. This position plays a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care in a dynamic teaching hospital environment.
The
IMC Veterinary Technician provides skilled nursing care for a wide range of cases-from post-operative recoveries and infectious disease management to patients requiring continuous monitoring or specialized treatments. Responsibilities include patient admissions, performing diagnostics and therapeutic procedures, monitoring and managing pain and anesthesia recovery, maintaining accurate medical records, lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis with or without accommodation, and supporting the hospital's mission of clinical excellence and education.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, demonstrates compassion and professionalism under pressure, and enjoys collaborating with clinicians, students, and fellow technicians. Strong communication, adaptability, teamwork, and a commitment to teaching and lifelong learning are key to success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care and medical treatments, including IV and catheter placement, venipuncture, transfusion therapy, pain management, and post-surgical recovery.
- Monitor and manage patients with complex medical needs such as seizure, respiratory, and infectious disease cases.
- Operate specialized equipment (IV pumps, syringe pumps, monitors, wound vacuums) safely and effectively.
- Record and communicate patient data accurately using hospital information systems.
- Support training and mentoring of students, interns, residents, and new staff members.
- Maintain compliance with hospital protocols, safety regulations, and infectious disease control procedures.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Proficiency in performing technical procedures such as catheterization, fluid therapy, and anesthesia or sedation recovery.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills with proven ability to provide compassionate client and patient care.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and teach veterinary students and colleagues.
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or eligibility for registration in North Carolina preferred.
