| About the Department |
The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (
MBS) is one of three departments in the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University and consists of 40 - 45 faculty members who have a diversity of research, clinical, and teaching interests and responsibilities. The department is staffed, in addition to faculty, by: 8-15 research scholar postdoctoral fellows, 20 - 30
EHRA non-faculty employees, 15 - 20 adjunct faculty members, 12 - 18 residents and interns, 8 - 13 research and teaching technicians, numerous graduate students and temporary employees and 3 administrative personnel.
The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences trains Doctors of Veterinary Medicine, House Officers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Our faculty consists of recognized experts in the fields of cell biology and physiology, cancer biology, developmental biology, environmental science and toxicology, genomics, infectious diseases, neuroscience, nutrition, pharmacology, anesthesiology, radiology, and reproductive biology. Our goals are to advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, and by mentoring and inspiring students, providing world-class clinical and diagnostic services, and offering the public the latest knowledge through innovative extension and engagement activities.
Our research faculty work in state-of-the-art research facilities. Our graduate students belong to any of a number of graduate programs offered at the university. In addition, faculty oversee the following clinical sections: anesthesia, clinical nutrition, pharmacology, and the radiology residency. |

| Essential Job Duties |
The Accountant for the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (
MBS) oversees all aspects of financial management for a complex portfolio of departmental funds, including state-appropriated, discretionary, foundation/gift, grant, and sales and service accounts. This role ensures fiscal compliance, provides timely and accurate financial reporting, and supports faculty, staff, and leadership in achieving operational and strategic goals.
Serving as a trusted financial advisor, the Accountant collaborates closely with the
CVM Business Office to maintain fiscal integrity for an annual budget encompassing multiple funding sources. Success in this role requires initiative, analytical precision, and a commitment to excellent customer service.
Departmental Budget & Faculty Support
- Manage departmental budgets and reconcile projects with internal faculty budget records.
- Prepare and distribute annual faculty financial reports.
- Coordinate project setup and closeout in collaboration with the CVM Business Office.
- Lead the annual year-end close process and ensure timely financial submissions.
- Manage faculty and staff salary distributions, process changes, and maintain supporting documentation.
- Advise departmental leadership on financial planning, trends, and funding allocations.
Contracts & Grants
- Monitor grant expenditures to ensure compliance with allowable fund use and sponsor terms.
- Review balances to prevent deficits and assist with closeouts in coordination with the CVM Grants Office.
- Submit contracts through the University Contract System for appropriate review and signatures.
- Prepare salary release calculations and update allocations as new awards are received.
Procurement & Reimbursements
- Review and approve marketplace requisitions, receivers, and vouchers in compliance with university policy.
- Complete and reconcile monthly Purchase Card statements and oversee Supplier Center compliance.
- Process honoraria, stipends, awards, and reimbursements, ensuring timely and accurate payments.
Travel Management
- Review and approve travel authorizations and reimbursements.
- Provide guidance to faculty and staff on university travel policies and fund sources.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
Bachelor's degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate's degree in Accounting; or Associate's degree in Business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
| Other Required Qualifications |
- Strong knowledge of accounting and budgetary principles, practices, and procedures, including GAAP.
- Proven ability to analyze and interpret complex financial data to produce accurate, actionable reports.
- Proficiency with financial and reporting systems such as PeopleSoft Financials, Wolfpack Reporting System (WRS), and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate effectively across all levels of the department.
- Demonstrated professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to providing timely, accurate financial support.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Knowledge of NC State's financial systems (PeopleSoft, WOLF Reports, Labor and Payroll Distribution Reports, PINS, RADAR, PMR).
- Advanced Excel skills for budget projections, spending analysis, and report creation.
- Familiarity with university, state, and federal procurement and compliance regulations.
- Experience preparing and reconciling sponsored project accounts and department-level financials.
