Upon the order of a qualified healthcare provider, the Lead Vein Clinic Technologist will operate equipment using high frequency sound waves for diagnostic purposes according to policies, procedures, and protocols of the KSC Cardiology Department and Kelsey-Seybold Clinic to perform Vascular sonography and Vein Clinic procedures. The Ultrasound Technologist will utilize the designated Radiology Information System (RIS) to complete clerical processes and the designated Patient Archiving System (PACS) as is applicable. May be assigned to other duties, technical or non-technical if training, experience and credentials are deemed adequate by the supervisor to perform those duties. These procedures may include EKGs and Cardiac sonography. Primary Responsibilities:
- Training and Development:
- Provides oversight for all staff engaged in the performance of diagnostic cardiology laboratory procedures. Lead Vein Clinic Ultrasound Technologist will provide direct training of current or new Cardiology Ultrasound staff with a current vascular registry. Lead Vein Clinic Ultrasound Technologist may assign staff to a mentor Vascular registered Ultrasound technologist. Responsible for ensuring that all facilities and equipment are in compliance with Clinic policies and procedures. Maintains and provides accurate and complete documentation. Participates in formal and in-service training programs of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, department specific inservices, and any applicable site-specific training
- Information Technology:
- Primary resource for equipment, PACS, and IT issues unresolved by Cardiology Ultrasound staff. Responsible for reporting any facility issues to the Cardiology Lab Manager or Supervisor. Understands the report creation functionality within the Cardiology PACS system. Understands PACS system and can identify problems with image transmission as they occur and notify the Vascular Echo Ultrasound Supervisor or Cardiology Lab Manager when corrective actions are beyond the scope of the help desk and technologist
- Organizational:
- Provides feedback to the Vascular Echo Ultrasound Supervisor and Cardiology Lab Manager in the preparation for the clinic room design and needs, to include collection of data of that that would support clinic directives. Support the roll-out of new equipment, new services or new facilities. Coordinate with IT and Vascular Echo Ultrasound Supervisor or Cardiology Lab Manager to verify the operation of new capital purchases and that all new construction is ready for immediate use. Coordinate services with Clinic Administrators
- Procedure Management:
- Receives, processes, and edits Vascular studies in the Cardiology Ultrasound PACS. Coordinate's all echo/vascular services. Uses RIS system correctly, according to Clinic and Department guidelines and properly documents, for the cardiologist's review, atypical conditions, which could affect image quality and/or content. Inputs study information into PACS. Manage open orders variance reports. Supports Cardiology in maintaining and processing studies with EHITs; this includes data analysis
- Cardiology Lab Duties:
- Demonstrates the ability to work with minimum supervision. Performs technical and supportive patient care to facilitate patient's non-invasive cardiology diagnostic testing, which includes but is not limited to: Upper and Lower Extremity arterial/venous studies, Carotid and Aortic studies. Performs technical and supportive patient care to assist the Cardiologist with ultrasound guidance during Ablation, Venaseal or other interventional venous procedures. Understands and applies technical principles affecting optimal production of sonographic images, as well as anatomical orientations and anomalies affecting final product. Understands age related communication needs of patients and is able to effectively convey instructions to patients to facilitate the optimal performance of studies and patient experience
- Problem Resolution:
- Under the direction of the Cardiology Lab Manager or Vascular Echo Ultrasound Supervisor. Responsible for small group meetings to discuss correct Vein Clinic Ultrasound workflows. Responsible for recording staff meeting minutes. Communicates effectively to resolve patient, provider and Cardiology Lab staff issues at the direction of the Cardiology Lab Manager or Supervisor. Interact effectively with departments to manage the patient care experience
- Human Resources:
- Participates in departmental meetings and demonstrates involvement in process improvement. Participates in special projects deemed necessary by the Vascular Echo Ultrasound Supervisor or Cardiology Lab Manager. Complete or coordinate all staff annual competencies. Provide Cardiology Lab leadership all annual vascular competencies for review. Provide input to the Cardiology Lab Manager and Supervisor for recommended changes to department policy and procedures. Maintains CME and ultrasound registries
- Schedule Maintenance:
- The Lead Vein Clinic Technologist will coordinate the Echo/ Vascular techs weekly schedules. Coordinate time-off requests with the Vascular Echo Ultrasound Supervisor. Maintains any Daily Edit Requests under the direction of the Supervisor. Collects statistical data for utilization review. Makes recommendations for departmental improvements to the Vascular Echo Ultrasounds Supervisor or Cardiology Lab Manager
- Supply Chain Management:
- Primary responsibility for purchases processed through the on-line purchasing system. Reconciles all orders and maintains inventory documentation. Communicates with the Vascular Echo Ultrasound Supervisor and the purchasing representative to resolve any discrepancies. Provides initial evaluation for new equipment/product purchases. Provides documented instructions and/or training for any new products to staff
- Quality Assurance:
- Supports Clinics response plans for all Code Blue, Code Orange, Code White, Code Red, and Code Silver. Participates in the process improvement plan and/or initiatives. Support Clinic and department reaccreditation requirements and helps facilitate adherence. Actively participates in preparing the Cardiology Lab for EHS inspections

- High School diploma or GED from an accredited program or Associate degree in related healthcare field
- RVT or RVS
- BCLS certification
- Internal: 3+ years of experience as an Ultrasound Tech and performing vascular studies
- External: 5+ years of experience as an ultrasound tech and performing vascular studies
- Basic computer, CRT, and typing experience
- Willing or ability to work extended shifts in situations deemed necessary by the Supervisor Vascular Echo Ultrasound, Cardiology Lab Supervisor or Cardiology Lab Manager. Good verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related health field
- RVT or RVS and RDCS or RCS
- 5+ years of experience performing vascular studies and ultrasound guided procedures. Echocardiography ultrasound familiarity
- PACS and RIS experience
- Demonstrated ability to speak an additional language
- Proven excellent organizational skills
