Company Overview
Performance Drone Works (PDW) builds technologies for the warfighter, by the warfighter. Born out of the Drone Racing League, our roots are competitive, our mindset is tactical, and our mission is clear: deliver purpose-built unmanned systems to those who serve. We are not here to sell vapor; we build and ship real capabilities for real missions.

PDW is seeking an R&D Automation Engineer to design, build, and optimize advanced robotic and automated assembly systems that accelerate innovation and enable scalable production. This individual will bridge mechanical design, controls engineering, and process development, leading the creation of automation cells, robotic tooling, and quality inspection workflows.

Working closely with the R&D and manufacturing teams, this role will drive the automation of prototype and production processes, improving repeatability, efficiency, and throughput across programs.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop automation cells integrating robotic arms, cobots, custom jigs, and end-effectors for assembly, inspection, and material handling applications.
  • Program and tune robotic systems (e.g., UR, FANUC, ABB, or equivalent) to execute precision assembly sequences and adapt to evolving R&D requirements.
  • Prototype and integrate control systems, including PLCs, vision systems, and sensors for closed-loop automation and quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to develop automation solutions that improve process consistency and reduce manual effort.
  • Iterate rapidly with R&D teams to validate assembly methods, optimize motion paths, and refine tool designs based on performance feedback.
  • Document and standardize processes, including programming protocols, fixture configurations, and safety procedures, to ensure repeatability and scalability.
  • Conduct structured testing to evaluate accuracy, cycle time, reliability, and overall system performance under realistic production conditions.
  • Evaluate new automation technologies and methodologies, such as collaborative robotics, machine vision, and AI-based quality inspection, for integration into future systems.
  • Support transition to production, ensuring automated solutions are robust, manufacturable, and cost-effective.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in robotics, automation engineering, or advanced manufacturing R&D.
  • Strong proficiency with robot programming and system integration (FANUC, KUKA, or similar platforms).
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, motion control, and end-effector/tooling design.
  • Experience with PLC programming, sensor integration, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of machine vision systems, calibration, and automated quality inspection workflows.
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling (SolidWorks, or equivalent).
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and optimize complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills - capable of translating technical findings into clear, actionable insights.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented, and energized by cross-functional collaboration in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Preferred

  • Hands-on experience with collaborative robots (cobots) and human-robot interaction safety standards (ISO 15066).
  • Familiarity with Python or C++ for automation scripting, simulation, or data collection.
  • Experience integrating machine vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, OpenCV) and sensors for adaptive automation.
  • Exposure to rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, machining, additive manufacturing).
  • Background in process optimization and design-for-automation (DFA).
  • Knowledge of manufacturing quality systems and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Experience in bringing prototype automation systems to pilot or production deployment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, climb, and move about regularly throughout the day and lift / carry up to 50 pounds. Must have manual dexterity to operate standard machine shop equipment as well as standard office equipment. Must be physically capable of tolerating loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE).

Work Environment

This position typically operates in a standard office setting and manufacturing environment. This role requires use of standard office equipment and may involve exposure to loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE) and may require occasional travel to test sites/customer locations/supplier facilities. This position may have exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and non-climate-controlled environments. May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on the environment. This is a fast-paced work environment and requires cross departmental collaboration with independent and team-based responsibilities. Standard works hours for this position are 8:30am-5:00pm with occasional overtime as operational needs demand.

ITAR Requirement

In compliance with International Traffic Arms Regulations (ITAR), candidates must be U.S. Citizens, U.S. Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) or individuals granted asylee/refugee status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).

Compensation and Benefits

PDW values our team, and we offer a compensation package reflective of your experience and capabilities. Benefits include:

  • Comprehensive BCBS medical, dental, and vision coverage; 80% sponsored by the company.
  • Safe Harbor 401(K) with company match.
  • Paid Parental Leave.
  • A work environment that encourages teamwork and innovation.
  • Competitive salary, generous paid time off (PTO), and flexible leave options.
