Job Summary

Manages a wide variety of administrative duties: daily tracking of safety department staff absences, arranges daily deployment of staff to cover said absences, manages all requests for extra hours & overtime assignments district-wide, provides training to safety department staff in the areas of rules & procedures listed by the district and by the department with an emphasis on absences & payroll, provides direct supervision to selected supervisors, acts as misconduct hearing officer.

Salary Range: $57,773 - $80,138

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • A bachelors degree is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience and previous experience in law enforcement or safety is desired.
  • A minimum experience of 4 years as a safety supervisor is preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of training, education and experience will be considered.
Responsibilities

  • Tracks the School Safety department's absences, and notifies supervisors who will be affected by said absences. This includes, listening through numerous calls on the absence call-in line, recording the absences on a daily log, maintaining the log for future use, and statistical planning. Requires working collaboratively with the payroll secretary to process long and short-term absences such as FMLA and other approved leaves.
  • Records absences and compares with the payroll secretary as well as other supervisors to ensure accuracy of absence time reported, used, and paid to employees. Ensures all substantiating documentation is provided for absences as required per policies and procedures; reconciles daily log with documentation to ensure accuracy.
  • Upon assessing how absences affect various schools on a daily basis, resources are moved to fill vacancies. Notifies the affected supervisor when safety assistants are redeployed. Additional personnel, safety assistants who are not assigned to a particular school, will be deployed as needed by this supervisor.
  • Ensures incidents that occur at schools and other sites are recorded when they are called in to the School Safety department. office. Documents are prepared and then recorded for statistical review and needs. Ensures the director (assistant director) is informed of all critical incidents in a timely manner and provides follow-up information when appropriate.
  • Assigns safeties to additional assignments and extra duty. Assigns the School Safety department personnel according to established procedures to ensure a fair rotation of assignments to those members who are interested in extra hours or overtime. Requires an analytical ability with an eye for detail, accurate documentation, and timeliness as some requests are made on the same day of an event. Requires accuracy to ensure proper payment and payroll records. Determines how many safety assistants will be required to ensure safety, considering: hours, time of day, anticipated attendance, environment and budget.
  • Provides training to new employees in the area of payroll, absences, and various other aspects pertaining to district and department rules and procedures, such as stress management and diversity, and provides in-service training to all safeties as directed.
  • Assists the director in updating the School Safety department manual, encompassing rules pertaining to the safety department.
  • Oversees staff and handles appropriate Human Resources functions as necessary. Interviews applicants for the position of safety assistants.
  • At the direction of the director, the supervisor will act as the misconduct hearing officer for the School Safety department.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
