PRN General Surgery PA MedStar Health Medical Group, the largest provider of services in the Maryland/D.C. region, is currently seeking experienced surgical PAs for PRN shifts at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. Position: Physician Assistant (Surgery) Department: General Surgery Schedule: Per Diem- Days POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of a physician, the Surgical Physician Assistant is responsible for providing varied medical services, which may include obtaining complete medical history and performing a physical examination, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies, formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan, prescribing and/or dispensing medication, rounding on admitted patients, assisting in the operating room, counseling patients and families, and other patient care duties. May be involved with a patient's medical care in any role which the attending physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, delineation of privileges, and the Physician Assistant's training, knowledge, skill, and experience. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES: * In collaboration with attending physicians, admits, evaluates, treats, and discharges patients admitted to the Department of Surgery inpatient hospitalist service. * Assist surgeons during operative procedures. * Prepare operating rooms and ensure that all necessary equipment is sterilized and available. * Conduct pre-operative patient assessments. * Provide postoperative care and monitoring. * Coordinate patient care with other healthcare professionals. * Perform suturing, wound care, and bandaging. * Take patient medical histories and perform physical examinations. * Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as X-rays and lab work. * Develop and implement patient treatment plans. * Administer medications and injections as prescribed. * Educate patients and families on surgical procedures and postoperative care. * Maintain accurate and detailed patient records. * Participate in surgical rounds and staff meetings. * Maintains patients' confidentiality. * Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided. * Utilizes the hospital's cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals. * Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. JOB REQUIREMENTS: * Previous experience in a surgical environment required * Strong interpersonal and communication skills. * Exceptional organizational abilities. * Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems. * Ability to work in high-pressure and fast-paced environments. * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. * Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. * In-depth knowledge of surgical procedures and practices. * Ability to cross train between specialties including GYN, breast and plastics, C-sections and ortho. EDUCATION: * Graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant program. * Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). * National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: * Licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Maryland. * DEA Controlled Substance Registration and Maryland CDS are required. * Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. * Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. EXPERIENCE: * Prior experience in the OR and surgical setting is required. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: * Successful candidates will be self-directed, demonstrate initiative and professionalism, and exercise expert clinical judgment to function independently in this role. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to communicate complex medical information to collaborators such as patients and their families, physicians, staff, and community health workers. * Physician assistants who have exceptional problem solving and conflict resolution skills are preferred.
