- Located at one of the following stations in Eden Prairie, Minnesota: Station 1 (14800 Scenic Heights Road). Station 2 (12100 Sunnybrook Road). Station 3 (7350 Eden Prairie Road). Station 4 (17920 Linwood Court)
- Scheduled for 24-hour shifts from 7: 45 a.m. to 8: 00 a.m., typically 2184 hours per year. May vary based on business need.
Responsibilities
The Lieutenant is responsible for providing work direction to firefighters and upholding fire department operating standards and procedures to ensure consistent and effective service is provided to the community. This position provides leadership ensuring suppression, emergency medical services and specialized responses are running smoothly. This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact:
- Effectively performs as the officer (Right Front Seat) on the apparatus for incident response and reporting. Performs all duties of an Eden Prairie Firefighter such as responding to emergency and non-emergency calls. During emergencies, assumes command until relieved by an officer of higher rank or until completion of duties.
- Provides work direction and supervision to firefighters through training, open communication, coaching and mentorship to ensure that Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines are followed. Ensures positive public relations are upheld and practiced by firefighters on and off scene during a scheduled shift. Assigns, schedules and directs firefighters on shift, to perform tasks and ensures that all details directed by the Assistant Chief (24-Hour) are carried out.
- Informs Command Staff of performance assessments and fire department updates observed on shift to maintain effective communication of daily operations and needs. Identifies and responds to concerns surrounding firefighter performance expectations while on shift and involves Command Staff support.
- Effectively communicates consistent departmental information from Command Staff to their shift such as updates to duties, policies, performance and expectations pertinent to operations. Maintains consistent, efficient and positive communication.
- Develops training curriculum and leads training sessions using lesson plans to ensure firefighters receive the training and resources needed to be successful in their role. Monitors, supports and coaches performance. Actively partners with assistant chiefs (24-Hours) to assist in developing and providing on shift training, station training, and department training opportunities that align with the goals of the Fire Department.
- Supports emergency management and fire/life safety activities to include public education, pre-plans, inspections, and special events to support community risk reduction and firefighter safety.
- Provides support to electronic communications, technology and equipment including radio communication systems, paging systems, cameras and building security. Provides ongoing, general maintenance and technological support and demonstrates an ability to troubleshoot moderate issues that arise with limited support during shift. Coordinates maintenance, repairs and escalates major technological challenges appropriately.
- Ensures effective and efficient operations. Completes projects and tasks to support the department. Performs timely and accurate readiness checks on apparatus and stations. Participates in department events and activities.

Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED equivalency is required.
- Associate’s degree is preferred.
- Current Firefighter I and Firefighter II (including Hazardous Materials Operations) certification is required.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is required.
- State (or Eden Prairie Fire Department) Certified Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO) is required.
- Front Right Seat Officer experience is required.
- Blue Card certification is required after two years in position (must begin first year in position).
- Officer I and Instructor I State Certification is required within four years in position.
- A minimum of three years of experience as a firefighter within the Eden Prairie Fire Department or in a fire department of a similar size is required.
- One year of experience with the Eden Prairie Fire Department is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.
- Work involves frequent calls in emergency situations. There is regular exposure to very disagreeable working conditions such as fumes, fire, smoke, extreme weather conditions including ice, snow, extreme high and low temperatures, humidity, rain, dirt, mud. The work involves exposure to hazardous conditions such as toxic chemicals, slippery conditions, working in traffic areas and adverse road conditions. While at emergency scenes, there may be exposure to injury, trauma, blood-borne pathogens, traffic accidents, and visual and emotional trauma. Required to take appropriate safety precautions and wear protective equipment and must be able to stand, climb ladders, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and reach, to walk or run on uneven surfaces, and to drag up to 185 pounds for a distance of 50 feet. There is hearing/listening, seeing/observing, communication, grasping and occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 50 pounds and regular moving of objects up to 20 pounds. Moderate attention to detail and deadlines is required in completing reports and paperwork. Works rotating on-call schedules, in which sleep can be disrupted.
- Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment. The City of Eden Prairie conducts the following pre-employment processes for this position including professional reference checks, background check, driver’s license check (must have a valid driver's license and excellent driving record), work verification, physical ability, pre-employment physical exam and psychological evaluation.
