Assistant Professor of Instruction in Humanities Data Science

The University of Texas at Austin
United States, Texas, Austin
101 East 27th Street (Show on map)
Dec 09, 2025
Description

The Behavioral and Social Data Science Program (BSDS) in partnership with the Department of English at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a professional track Assistant Professor of Instruction to begin in Fall of academic year 2026-27. We seek candidates with scholarly expertise in the digital humanities and/or data sciences, and secondary investment in any sub-discipline in humanities that could contribute to undergraduate course offerings.

BSDS is a new, interdisciplinary major at UT-Austin that integrates computational methods with humanistic and social inquiry. Students in the BSDS Humanities track learn to analyze, interpret, and communicate across digital and cultural domains, preparing them for careers that connect data science to the interpretive and critical traditions of the humanities. As one of the newest interdisciplinary programs in the College of Liberal Arts, BSDS offers unique opportunities for faculty to shape curriculum, develop innovative courses, and contribute to a growing field that bridges data science and the humanities.

Position expectations include teaching three courses a semester, engaging in scholarly activity, and contributing to the service missions of BSDS and the College of Liberal Arts. Specific assignments will include teaching courses in computer programming for humanities students (i.e. Python, R), developing digital humanities projects, and mentoring student capstone projects.

This position is initially for a fixed one-year term, however funding is secured for three years, with the expectation of that funding being extended. Based on performance, programmatic need, and funding, the appointment is renewable, initially on an annual basis, with the goal of eventual multi-year appointment.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by time of appointment in a humanities discipline and expertise in Digital Humanities. Preferred qualifications include teaching excellence and scholarly activity in digital humanities and/or data studies for humanities.

Application Instructions

To apply, please submit a letter of application, a curriculum vita, a small teaching portfolio (with 2 undergraduate syllabi, representative selection of student evaluations, and a 1-page statement of teaching philosophy), a short writing sample and/or digital project, and three letters of recommendation. After the initial review of applications, selected applicants may be asked for additional information before remote interviews.

The application deadline is December 15, 2025.
