Overview

The Supv Histopathology is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the histopathology laboratory under the general direction of the Laboratory Manager and/or Director of Laboratory Operations. The Supervisor is accountable for supervising personnel, making sure the operations are performed as documented by trained personnel to ensure accurate reporting and identifying and implementing process improvements. The Supervisor shall be on the laboratory premises during all hours in which laboratory procedures are performed or be available by telephone or electronic means.

Responsibility
  1. Ensuring laboratory compliance with all laboratory procedures including administrative, and safety policies.
  2. Development and implementation of departmental procedures in accordance with the laboratory's policies and procedures.
  3. Ensuring participation of all department personnel in the laboratory's quality assurance plan, adhering to quality control and preventive maintenance policies, and appropriately documenting these activities.
  4. Being available to laboratory personnel at all times while sample processing is being performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve problems in accordance with the laboratory's policies and procedures. Whenever the supervisor is not available, a qualified designee must be available to the staff.
  5. Monitoring testing systems to ensure that acceptable levels of performance are maintained and ensuring appropriate corrective action is taken whenever the test system deviates from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  6. Troubleshooting and identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or reporting of test results by initiating corrective action and using the defined electronic system to make the required management notification.
  7. Working with the Training Coordinator to ensure the development of an effective departmental training program in accordance with laboratory policy.
  8. Evaluating employee performance to ensure acceptable levels of competency and performance are maintained and documented and for taking appropriate promotion or corrective actions related to staff performance.
  9. Ensuring that no staff members are excluded from participating in accuracy verification events.
  10. Actively participating in successful and timely completion of training and competency assessment as outlined in the laboratory and departmental training programs.
  11. Where competency has not been approved by supervision, will work under the direct supervision of an employee competent on the task.
  12. Participates in or leads department and cross-functional teams to resolve problems or implement projects.
  13. Serve as a trainer on processes both within and between groups.
  14. Planning, including staffing, scheduling, and ordering of materials, to ensure the department's ability to meet the companywide production goals.
  15. Hiring, development, and retention of qualified staff members.
  16. Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel.
Qualifications
  1. Meets minimum regulatory education requirements:
    1. High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
    2. Bachelor's degree, or higher, preferred.
  2. One year of pertinent lab experience.
  3. Management experience is preferred but not required.
