This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we're developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin's mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.

The Director of Broadcast Engineering will architect and lead the studio engineering efforts of Blue Origin's digital broadcast team for our launches. We are looking for a thought leader who will conceptualize, implement, and maintain state-of-the-art production systems for multi-site and REMI based broadcasts. The Director will design and implement reliable, high performance technologies and systems that scale with Blue Origins launch goals.

The ideal leader will bring deep expertise in large scale live stream broadcasting, end-to-end technical leadership for broadcast production, ability to grow and scale a team to deliver best-in-industry results, and a commitment to flawless execution. Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Broadcast Engineering will deliver the following individually or through their team:

  • Architect and oversee implementation of digital broadcasting workflows, leveraging advanced technologies across on-prem, hybrid, and cloud-based production systems to create superior broadcast experiences.

  • Oversee technical broadcast planning, including network planning, encoder validation, test broadcasts, and contingency/redundancy planning for high-tier streams.

  • Manage distribution of live content to platforms like AWS IVS, YouTube, and X.com.

  • Own key technical decisions to create scalable, reliable, and efficient digital broadcast systems using protocols such as NDI, SDI, RTMP, and RTSP.

  • Grow and mentor a multi-disciplinary broadcast engineers and operators, contributing to a culture of innovation and excellence.

  • Point of contact with executive stakeholders for launch day planning, troubleshooting and escalation for live broadcast issues, ensuring minimal disruption and high-quality service delivery.

  • Draft and present technical roadmaps, business narratives, strategies, and standard operating procedures to leadership and cross-functional teams to improve production quality and response times.

  • Oversee cross-company technical reviews and summaries for major events, ensuring roadmap prioritization of broadcast/streaming concerns and issues.

  • Demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit, excellent judgment, and communication skills while delivering innovative solutions and building a team capable of implementing superior workflow systems

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in broadcast and live tv such as sports, events, and news with a combination of on-location and REMI production.

  • Demonstrates thought leadership in technology domains such as broadcast technologies, software development, cloud computing, systems engineering, infrastructure, security, networking, data & analytics.

  • Extensive experience with broadcast standards, workflows, routing, switching, encoding, audio processing, and distribution.

  • Experience building and managing teams of internal employees, contractors, and third party vendors to achieve shared goals.

  • Proven ability to communicate across technical and non-technical audiences, including executive-level business plans, presentations and workshops.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, broadcast engineering or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of distributed systems design and implementation.

  • Experience with large-scale automation and workflow management.

  • Experience with IP-based broadcast systems including NDI, SRT, RTMP, RTSP, AWS MediaLive, Tricaster, LiveU, and others.

  • Proven experience in architecting, migrating, transforming, or modernizing customer requirements to the cloud.

  • Strong presentation skills and comfort speaking with executives and technical teams.

  • Proficiency in core routing, switching design, configuration, troubleshooting, and understanding of video stream metadata.

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $218,262.00 - $305,566.80

  • Required for Certain Job Profiles: Drivers who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or combination of power unit and trailer that meets or exceeds 10,001 lbs. and/or transports placardable amounts of hazardous materials by ground in any vehicle on a public road while in commerce, may be subject to additional Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations including: Driver Qualification Files, Medical Certification (obtained before onboarding), Road Test, Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing (CDL drivers only), vehicle inspection requirements, CDL requirements (if applicable) and hazardous materials transportation/shipping training.

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
