Primary Purpose of Department
The goal of the Botanical Gardens is to promote the knowledge and appreciation of plants for educational, environmental and aesthetic purposes within a university setting. The Botanical Gardens is composed of the McMillan Greenhouse, the Susie Harwood Garden, and the Van Landingham collections. The Gardens is funded through a combination of state monies, endowments, and donations.
Primary Purpose of Position
This is primarily an administrative position which assists in guiding the Gardens by contributing to design, interpretation, and content of botanical collections; oversees the curation, health, and maintenance of the McMillan Greenhouse collections; and helps to pursue and manage fundraising opportunities including, but not limited to, plant sales, grant applications, and donor relations.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Assistant Director must have botanical expertise to help direct, maintain and manage the botanical content and displays of the Botanical Gardens to meet the needs of the Charlotte Community. The Assistant Director helps establish policy and implementation of public engagement endeavors with entities such as tour groups, volunteers, individual visitors, students, classes, etc.. The Assistant Director manages staff who maintain the Gardens and is also responsible for helping to identify appropriate plant materials for the various gardens that make up the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens. This position is a member of the Gardens' Leadership Team, is a key public face of the Gardens and, along with all other staff members, is responsible for the guest experience at the Gardens. The Assistant Director must be an enthusiastic advocate for the Gardens. This position reports to the Director of the Botanical Gardens.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Botany, Horticulture, Plant Science or related discipline with four years of experience managing personnel in a botanical garden or similar entity.

5 years of experience managing a Greenhouse
