Winston-Salem State University is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to support the efficient and effective operation of the Office of Human Resources. This role serves as a key point of contact for conducting desk audits and leading succession planning training and implementation with supervisors and managers across the campus. Providing high-quality customer service, administrative support, and operational assistance across multiple HR functions. This role is critical to ensuring position alignment, workforce planning, leadership continuity, and compliance with HR and classification standards.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, service-driven, and committed to maintaining confidentiality while supporting personnel processes, HR systems, office management, and strategic initiatives such as desk audits and succession planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Desk Audits & Position Management
- Conduct desk audits to assess job duties, responsibilities, scope of work, and organizational alignment.
- Partner with supervisors and employees to gather, analyze, and document position information.
- Succession Planning & Supervisor Training
- Train supervisors and managers on succession planning concepts, tools, and expectations.
- Assist departments in identifying critical roles, potential successors, and development needs.
- Support documentation, tracking, and ongoing monitoring of succession plans.
- Serve as the front-line contact for the Human Resources Office by greeting visitors, screening calls, and responding to inquiries.
- Assist applicants with the online application process and respond to general employment-related questions.
- Create, maintain, and update employee personnel files in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Process employee address changes and respond to employment verification requests from public agencies and creditors.
- Serve as backup support for processing background checks for prospective employees.
- Utilize HR systems such as PeopleAdmin and Banner to input, verify, retrieve, and report employee data.
- Assist with HR reporting, data extracts, and system inquiries as requested.
- Interpret and apply standard HR policies, procedures, and regulations to routine transactions and inquiries.
- Support office operations, including mail distribution, meeting room scheduling, supply ordering, equipment service requests, and budget monitoring (P-card).
- Coordinate intake paperwork for temporary employees, student workers, graduate assistants, and work-study students.
- Administer the Service Awards Program.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in all HR matters.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support HR Operations and institutional goals.
Hours (29 hours per week):Monday - Thursday 10 am-5pm & Friday 10am-4pm
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of human resources policies, procedures, and office practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to grammar, spelling, and professionalism.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to learn and use HR systems such as PeopleAdmin and Banner.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to build professional relationships.

The Department of Human Resources exists to provide human resources functionality for all employees of Winston-Salem State University. The unit will assist the Office of Academic Affairs in recruitment of
EPS faculty positions as well as other administrative officers, in the recruitment of administrative positions. Additionally, Human Resources provides classification, recruitment, and candidate selection guidance and processing for
SPA positions. The department has responsibility for administering all benefit programs, human relation administration, employee recognition and reward programs, salary administration, leave administration, position management, unemployment compensation, workers compensation, staff development training, as well as facilitation of both the American with Disabilities Act and Family Medical Leave Act. |

- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prior experience in a human resources, administrative, or customer service role preferred.

- Two years of progressive experience in Human Resources.
- Experience screening applicant qualifications to determine if they meet the position requirements through the use of an applicant tracking system.
- Experience processing personnel actions and reports in a Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
- Experience interpreting and applying human resources principles, practices, policies, and procedures preferably in the areas of hiring and salary administration.
- Experience providing consultation to business units regarding matters such as hiring, HRIS support, HR operations processes and procedures.
- Experience providing direct customer service to job applicants.
