The Department of Energy's (DOE) Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) accelerates the innovation and adoption of cost-effective technologies that position American industry to lead on the competitive stage in evolving global markets. ITO provides planning, management, and direction necessary for a balanced national program of research, development, demonstration, technical assistance, and workforce development to drive energy, materials, and production efficiency across the industrial sector.

About the Role:

The Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) is seeking an experienced candidate to assist DOE's technical subject matter experts to manage programs and initiatives that advance innovative technologies for key manufacturing sectors including iron and steel, chemicals, food and beverage, forest products, and concrete and cement. The selected contractor will engage deeply in the Energy-Intensive Industries (EII) team's technical projects and activities, interacting with experts in academia, industry, and at the national labs.

The role requires interacting closely with R&D projects that produce significant cost- and energy savings and improve the competitiveness of U.S manufacturing. The position will support the innovation and adoption of technologies developed through federal programs. The role may also require engaging with other programs at the Department of Energy and across the Federal government.

Responsibilities:

The position will have responsibilities in the following areas:

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Provide subject matter expertise to inform the research, development and deployment agenda of one or more energy-intensive industries: iron and steel, chemicals, food and beverage, forest products, or concrete and cement. Have a strong understanding of the current technical and market barriers to technology development, integration, and utilization related to the manufacturing sector.
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to strategic plans for technical research and development that advance the ITO and EII mission, resulting in measurable and trackable savings. Support activities associated with the development, maintenance, and execution of an innovation strategy which includes exploring areas of interest and participating in the process for development of funding awards and projects.
  • Program Management: Collaborate on the active project management of ITO awards to oversee a research, development, and demonstration portfolio of transformative manufacturing technologies in the United States.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with DOE staff and contractors in a program of activities to build and maintain relationships with leaders from industry and academia. As needed, engage in public-facing aspects of the EII program.
  • Communication: Support DOE staff to prepare and present written and oral briefings and reports to senior federal staff, DOE leadership, external partners, and industry stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in with federally funded R&D in energy, preferably working for the DOE as a fed or contractor.
    • R&D Strategy development through informed analysis.
    • R&D Solicitation development.
    • Technology Project Management.
    • Industry and/or public service experience in one or more energy intensive industries, including: Chemicals & Fuels; Iron & Steel; Cement & Concrete; Forest Products (particularly Pulping & Paper); and Food & Beverage.
  • Ability to engage industry stakeholders and to help support decisions on a multimillion-dollar technical project portfolio.
  • Ability to interpret data from multiple sources and present it to leadership in a clear manner.
  • A passion for improving energy efficiency and industrial innovation.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Successful drug screening.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Science or Engineering.
  • 10+ years of federal R&D experience in energy technology development.
  • Membership in pertinent associations is helpful.

Location/Work Arrangement:

  • Located in the Washington DC area with a hybrid work arrangement.
