As a CO+IMechanical Engineer, you will perform a key role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform. Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 200 datacenters in 32 countries and millions of servers. Our foundation is built upon and managed by a team of subject matter experts working to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide. With environmental sustainability and optimization at the forefront of our datacenter design and operations, we continue to grow and evolve as we meet the ever-changing business demands that hold Microsoft as a world-class cloud provider. Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities: Design Gathers information and participates in make-versus-buy decisions based on complexity, financial impact, quality, reliability, and time duration. Displays knowledge in a specific engineering domain and acquires advanced knowledge of industry trends, competitor products, and advances in various engineering fields. Shares knowledge with others on their team. Reads device specification sheets and interprets moderately complex details required to design and test various hardware features. Creates robust, scalable, secure, and extensible designs and verification plans for the hardware engineering aspects of moderately complex and well-defined products or features. Adheres to secure by design principles. Develops drawings for well-defined products or features using modeling tools with some general guidance and direction from other engineers. Participates in creating intellectual property. May file patents within own area of scope and completes necessary patent documentation, while adhering to security governance guidelines and frameworks. Implements known solutions to moderately complex technical and/or design challenges that may involve multiple technical variables (e.g., heat reduction, size, sound constraints) and provides guidance to other team members. Displays an understanding of how to clearly specify dimensions and measurement requirements that can be used in statistical analyses to evaluate product cost and quality. Uses predictive modeling techniques (e.g., tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Design for Six Sigma) to inform design choices for a well-defined feature or product and to assess and minimize security risks. Project Implementation Reviews available supplier or partner products to make recommendations in support of product development. Evaluates moderately complex details of the reliability of materials, properties, and techniques used in production. Identifies opportunities to affect downstream execution of projects by resolving issues and implementing design tradeoffs within scope (e.g., performance vs. reliability and manufacturing concerns). Identifies common project risks (e.g., supplier or partner delays, incomplete specs, security, or tool issues) at the outset of a project, and develops plans to address those risks. Supports Material Change Review Board (MCRB) efforts to improve sustainability and cost-reduction efforts, as required. Researches new tools, technologies, or processes for project implementation and provides recommendations to project team members as to which tool is appropriate. Coordinates a project implementation schedule to deliver the hardware engineering aspects of a moderately complex feature or product. Escalates issues to management as necessary. Communicates project progress/status within the project team and escalates issues as necessary. responsibility description Reporting and Documentation Documents complex details about materials, components, and/or functionality for a device via accepted drawing release processes and highlights potential compatibility, safety, security, or compliance issues. Accurately records and tracks changes to designs following established configuration management process with minimal guidance. responsibility descriptionTesting and Verification Sets up and breaks down testing environments for other engineers. Follows safety and security guidelines. Uses root cause analysis to identify complex problems or flaws that may affect a feature or product design change. Identifies possible solutions and brings them to the attention of other engineers or team leads. Uses standard templates and methodologies, or creates new templates, to independently write clear, complete design verification test cases. Documents the appropriate test requirements (including security logging and audits) and improvements to be included in relevant hardware designs by applying an understanding of how moderately complex features or products work under a variety of customer scenarios. Develops prototype hardware components for use in development, testing or validation of new product features with minimal guidance. Assists in evaluating prototypes for the purpose of innovating, optimizing and maturing designs. Records test data and conducts common data/statistical analyses to identify bugs, defects, or failure rates, adheres to data security and privacy protocols, and aids other team members in doing the same. Develops, reviews, and executes test plans for moderately complex feature areas or products. Supports the appropriate partners (e.g., Design Verification Engineering, Manufacturing Test Equipment Engineering, Reliability Engineering) and co-develops methods for measuring features of new product technology based on newly created or modified verification plans. Develops outsourced testing plans that provide comprehensive testing reports. Documents the appropriate test requirements and improvements to be included in relevant hardware designs by applying an understanding of how moderately complex features or products work under a variety of customer scenarios.
