Description

The Queens County District Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced Trial Preparation Assistant to work in its Cold Case Unit in the Homicide Bureau. This role is integral to the investigation and prosecution of unsolved homicide cases, helping prosecutors in reopening and building these cases.

The Cold Case Unit is comprised of an experienced team of assistant district attorneys, detective investigators and support staff who systematically review and reinvestigate unsolved cases. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful, high-impact work by helping to bring long-awaited resolution to unsolved homicide cases. Team members play a critical role in advancing justice through meticulous case preparation and innovative investigative support.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Collaborate with members of the New York City Police Department, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and other partner agencies
  • Gather, organize and maintain case files and supporting documentation
  • Draft legal documents, correspondence, and reports
  • Obtain records and evidence from external sources and jurisdictions
  • Scan, upload, and manage documentation within the cold case database
  • Identify, locate, and coordinate with witnesses, including scheduling interviews and appearances
  • Arrange travel and logistical coordination as needed
  • Assist attorneys during court proceedings and trial preparation
  • Conduct legal research and assist with written analysis
  • Review cold case homicides and unidentified remains to assess the potential for DNA or other forensic testing
  • Support investigative genetic genealogical investigations, including obtaining records across jurisdictions
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Bureau Chief to support the Unit.


Preferred Education and Qualification Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree with an educational focus on criminal justice or related education and/or experience. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or other work in the criminal justice field/and or intelligence analysis/data science. All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

TPA's must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to interact with attorneys, law enforcement, staff, witnesses and convicted persons and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with competing demands. Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach, including strong follow-up skills, accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines; adhere to strict requirements regarding legal records management, data protection, and privacy/confidentiality; working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word and advanced Excel experience is also required.

Application Information:

STARTING SALARY (NON-NEGOTIABLE): $55,000; upon completion of two years of City service, salary: $60,000.
