Overview

The Cross-Country Coach is responsible for enhancing student athlete performance, fostering skill development, and promoting a positive, collaborative team environment. The ideal candidate demonstrates effective communication skills, leadership qualities, and a genuine passion for helping student athletes succeed both on and off the mat. This position is expected to uphold and model a culture of compliance with all NJCAA bylaws, conference regulations, and institutional policies. The welfare, safety, and academic success of student athletes are top priorities.



Responsibilities

    Player/Team Development:
    • Assess and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of individuals or teams.
    • Design and implement structured training plans that emphasize fundamentals, technique, conditioning, and competitive readiness.
    • Provide constructive feedback to players or team members to facilitate continuous improvement.
    • Utilize video review and performance metrics to evaluate progress and adjust training strategies.
  1. Leadership and Motivation:
    • Inspire and motivate student-athletes to reach their full potential athletically, academically, and personally.
    • Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship and respect.
    • Serve as a role model for professionalism, ethical behavior, and integrity.
    • Address team conflict constructively and promote leadership development amount athletes.
  2. Communication and Recruitment:
    • Promote the Cross Country program and actively recruit, retain, and support student-athletes.
    • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, staff, and other stakeholders.
    • Provide clear instructions, expectations, and feedback in a supportive manner.
    • Keep stakeholders informed about team progress, schedules, events, and program updates.
    • Build and maintain relationships with local high schools, clubs, and community partners.
  3. Player Welfare & Safety
    • Monitor the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes.
    • Address health, safety, or personal concerns with sensitivity and appropriate referrals.
    • Collaborate with athletic trainers and medical professionals to support injury prevention, treatment, and return-to-play protocols.
    • Ensure adherence to emergency action plans, concussion protocols, and all NJCAA safety standards.
  4. Practice, Competition, & Game-Day Responsibilities
    • Plan and execute effective practice sessions and match-day strategies.
    • Provide real-time coaching, adjustments, and support during competitions.
    • Maintain composure under pressure and make sound decisions in dynamic situations.
    • Coordinate with event staff, officials, and opposing teams to ensure smooth operations.
    • Safely transport team and necessary equipment to and from events and competitions in Blackhawk Technical College vehicles as needed.
  5. Program Administration & Compliance
    • Ensure full compliance with NJCAA, institutional, and departmental rules and procedures.
    • Maintain accurate records, including eligibility documentation, practice logs, travel forms, and equipment inventory.
    • Participate in required meetings, compliance training, and professional development opportunities.
    • Assist with scheduling, travel planning, budgeting, and program operations.
    • Support fundraising, community engagement, and promotional activities.
  6. Academic Support & Student Development
    • Encourage academic achievement and monitor academic progress, class attendance, and study habits.
    • Communicate with academic advisors and support services to address academic concerns.
    • Promote a balanced approach to athletics, academics, and personal growth.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Experience as a cross country athlete and/or coach.
  2. Strong understanding of wresting fundamentals, technique, and training principles.
  3. Excellent communication skills, including ability to motivate and encourage student-athletes.
  4. Ability to build trust, foster teamwork, and maintain positive team culture.
  5. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education & Experience:

  1. Associate Degree in Education, Sports Management, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  2. Two or more years of experience within the area of cross country and/or coaching.
  3. Hold a valid Class D Driver's License (standard driver's license) with clean driving record. (Insurance approval required to drive college vehicles.)

Blackhawk Technical College does not offer H-1B or other work authorization visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout the employment term.
