Engineering Intern

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This Intern assignment will be responsible for supporting the research and development efforts of one of our Technical Engineering Fellows. The role requires a highly motivated individual that will assist in the design of software and hardware in experimental settings. The intern will work under close supervision of a more experienced engineer or manager. Interns are assigned to business related projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Support the engineering team in the following ways:



  • Develop interfaces between hardware and software.
  • Maintain inventory of items related to research and development efforts.
  • Prepare specifications for purchase of components and equipment.
  • Test electrical hardware, including circuit boards.
  • Design, implement, and maintain electrical instruments, equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems.
  • Prepare and study technical drawings and specifications of electrical systems.
  • Interface with engineers and scientists of varying disciplines during the design of new systems.
  • Maintains knowledge of engineering discipline through familiarity with current literature
  • Observes appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP),
  • Ensures compliance to all regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Performs other duties as may be required by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:



  • Planning and Organization - Systematically identifies issues to be addressed and plans a course of action for self and others to ensure the accomplishment of specific objectives.
  • Attention to detail - Utilizes established monitoring system, records data accurately and in a timely manner, and ensures accuracy of data.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:



  • Pursuing a Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related fields.
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Experience with MATLAB, python, C, C#
  • Experience using multi-meters, oscilloscopes, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work well with others in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated to continually expand knowledge and skills related to this position.



WORK ENVIROMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work Environment & Conditions

This position involves work in an office and laboratory environment and could require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:



  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
  • Shoe covers



Physical Demands

In performing the work for this position, the engineer must be able to:



  • Perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
