SUMMARY:
Responsible for coordinating and supervising operations and work flow of all levels of Radiation Therapists and other applicable support personnel. Develops and maintains an effective work group to ensure that Radiation Therapy is delivered in accordance with established policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities, with consideration of the aging process and human development stages (neonate, child, adolescent, adult, geriatric) to ensure that the customers' expectations are met or exceeded. Participates in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and budgets for Radiation Oncology and Gamma Knife as applicable. In addition, provides administrative oversight of Radiation Therapist technical activities for Gamma Knife. RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as the liaison between Radiation Therapists and Radiation Oncologists, Nurses, Dosimetrists, Physicists, and administrative staff for treatment procedures. Conveys the instructions of the radiation oncologist to the appropriate treatment unit and ensures they are carried out. Primarily responsible for the recruitment, retention, performance enhancement and competency assessment of subordinate personnel in collaboration with Radiation Oncology Directors. Ensures compliance to established policies, procedures, and relevant labor contracts. Provides actionable feedback to employees to promote effective teamwork and satisfaction in the workplace in consultation with Radiation Oncology Directors. Participates in determining the qualifications and competence of department personnel and in the development of tools and standards to establish and improve competency levels of the staff including orientation of new employees, in-service training and continuing education programs. Coordinates and supervises operations and processes in assigned area of responsibility. Implements, interprets and provides consultations for Radiation Oncology policies, procedures, and standards of practice. Continually reviews and analyzes operations recommending and implementing operational changes, allocation of resources and new technologies that will increase the efficiency and level of service. Develops and administers staffing schedules, including on-call rotations, for Radiation Therapists and other radiation oncology support personnel as applicable. Prepares work schedules and machine rotation schedules for Radiation Oncology and Gamma Knife. Develops simulation protocols and procedures and assists in developing treatment protocols. Maintains, reviews, and updates policies and procedures for Radiation Therapists in accordance with Joint Commission standards. Assures all equipment is in safe and satisfactory working condition, reports deficiencies as they arise to the engineer or the physicist. Participates in the decision process to put machine down due to a malfunction. Serves as liaison between IS and IMPAC users for al IMPAC issues and notifies appropriate personnel of computer malfunctions. Attends IMPAC users meetings to stay current in new technology. Provides input regarding the technical quality of the radiation equipment. Maintains computerized systems, software programs and specialized equipment and technologies utilized in Radiation Oncology in collaboration with the department directors and information services. Maintains clinical proficiency and assists staff with difficult procedures. Reinforces advice given to patients about skin care, diet, etc. Recognizes the signs and symptoms of developing complications during treatment and knows when to withhold treatment pending evaluation by a radiation oncologist. Reviews dosage calculations in patient charts. At the end of treatment, reviews charts for correctness. Reviews portal films. Ensures that treatment plans are carried out accurately and that all Radiation Therapists' procedures are of the highest quality. Maintains knowledge of, and expertise in, leading edge developments in Radiation Oncology services, programs, and innovative technology by participation in on-going, independent study, education-related professional activities and affiliations. Effectively and continually communicates with the staff, management and customers to facilitate the flow of operations. Provides timely and accurate communication (written and verbal) as appropriate regarding operational changes and continuous quality improvement activities. Establishes and maintains techniques and standards of quality control and assurance for the technical areas of Radiation Oncology and Gamma Knife. Disseminates information to the technical staff and reports quality indicator results monthly at department quality assurance meetings. Prepares papers for presentation at professional organization meetings and submits manuscripts for publication in professional journals. Interviews applicants, makes recommendations for hiring and evaluates the performance of personnel reporting to this position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Graduate of a Radiologic Technologist program accredited by the American Medical Association (AMA). Baccalaureate degree preferred or advanced study in a related field. Registered by the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Licensed Radiation Therapist in the State of Rhode Island. Effective verbal and writing skills. Effective personal computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet and database design and maintenance. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the Brown University Health with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of five years experience as a Radiation Therapist, preferably in a high volume, complex, academic clinical practice site. Three to Five years progressively more responsible supervisory and management experience. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to stand and walk for period of time. Some lifting of patients and equipment. Ability to deal with exposure to low-energy radiation. Hazards are minimized by observing safety precautions. Wears film badge to monitor exposure. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervisory responsibility for up to 15 FTEs.
