Job Description

The Mortgage Finance Portfolio Manager facilitates the origination, underwriting, and ongoing credit management of a commercial mortgage finance loan portfolio. This role is responsible for independently preparing credit analysis and underwriting recommendations for new originations, renewals, extensions, and modifications, while ensuring compliance with the Bank's Credit Policy and underwriting standards.

The Portfolio Manager partners closely with Relationship Managers, Senior Portfolio Managers, and Credit Administration to evaluate borrower financial condition, collateral performance, and transaction structure. The position requires sound credit judgment, strong analytical skills, and the ability to identify emerging risks and policy exceptions, while escalating complex or higherrisk issues to senior credit officers as appropriate.

How You'll Spend Your Time
  • You will prepare independent underwriting and credit analysis for loan requests, renewals, and modifications using cash flow, leverage, liquidity, and repayment metrics.
  • You will analyze historical and pro forma financials, collateral, and borrowing base data to evaluate overall credit risk.
  • You will draft clear credit memoranda highlighting risks, mitigants, strengths, weaknesses, and policy exceptions for approval review.
  • You will monitor the loan portfolio through covenant compliance reviews, financial analysis, and identification of risk trends.
  • You will identify, document, and escalate covenant breaches, noncompliance issues, and early warning indicators while supporting remediation efforts.
  • You will collaborate with Relationship Managers and internal partners to support deal structuring, underwriting accuracy, and timely closings.
  • You will participate in client discussions, stress testing, sensitivity analysis, and portfolio reporting to support asset quality oversight.
Education & Experience Requirements

This level of knowledge is normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree in finance or accounting, or related field of study and 5-8 years of experience in credit underwriting, credit analysis, portfolio management, or commercial/mortgage finance. Prior exposure to warehouse lending, mortgage banking clients, or specialty finance products is a plus.

  • Strong accounting and cash flow expertise, including GAAP vs. tax accounting, accrual vs. cash methods, consolidations, and underwriting impacts
  • Solid understanding of credit principles, loan analysis, lending functions, and credit policy application
  • Experience with mortgage warehouse lending structures and secondary market execution
  • Proficient in counterparty credit risk assessment, financial statement analysis, and collateral evaluation
  • Ability to identify operational, credit, fraud, concentration, and emerging risks and recommend appropriate risk mitigants
  • Knowledge of agency and government loan programs (FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, USDA) and investor behavior
  • Sound judgment in escalating exceptions, breaches, and risks to Relationship Managers
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple transactions, deadlines, and time-sensitive deliverables independently
  • Detail-oriented with strong critical review skills and focus on accuracy
  • Proactive communicator with confidence to challenge conclusions and engage in difficult conversations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced proficiency in PC and spreadsheet software
