Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking an intern for its Street Name Signs (SNS) Unit to support citywide sign condition assessments, work order development, and contract coordination efforts.
The selected candidate will perform systematic reviews of roadway intersections using a combination of mapping tools, street-level imagery, and internal databases (including SIMS) to evaluate existing street name signage conditions. This includes identifying missing, damaged, vandalized, improperly mounted, or non-compliant signs, as well as detecting outdated signage that does not meet current standards, including retro-reflectivity requirements (e.g., TIII material compliance).
The intern will be responsible for: -Conducting detailed intersection-level assessments based on assigned geographic grids to determine signage deficiencies and required corrective actions -Identify intersections with high rates of pedestrian (Killed or Seriously Injured) incidents using available safety data to determine locations for Oversized Street Name Sign (OSNS) installations. -Maintaining structured tracking logs of reviewed intersections, including documentation of compliant vs. non-compliant locations, to ensure full coverage without duplication -Generating draft work orders within SIMS, including clear, concise notes for contractor execution, subject to senior staff review and approval -Utilizing city mapping tools and spatial layouts to identify corridors and prioritize locations requiring inspection or intervention -Understanding and applying basic intersection geometry, including corner orientation (N/E/S/W), to accurately describe work locations -Flagging locations that present immediate safety concerns or hazardous conditions for expedited review -Supporting ongoing contract operations by ensuring accurate data entry, recordkeeping, and coordination between field conditions and system records -Under supervision, the intern will gain exposure to the operational workflow of a municipal signage program, including inspection planning, contractor coordination, and compliance tracking.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team. Strong analytical skills, spatial awareness, and the ability to interpret real-world conditions from mapping and imagery tools are essential. The role requires a high level of accuracy in documentation and the ability to follow structured processes while adapting to evolving project needs.
