The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program (
ICSP) at the Brody School of Medicine (
BSOM) provides access to simulation-based education for learners across the Health Sciences Campus and
ECU Health Medical Center. The program collaborates closely with
ECU Health Medical Center in offering educational activities to Graduate Medical Education, EastCare, and other hospital staff. The mission of the Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, promote patient and learner safety, and improve multidisciplinary team performance using simulation modalities. The
ICSP is a fully accredited program by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The
ICSP is moving into a new 30,000 sq ft Simulation Center in the Center for Medical Education building in 2027. |
| Job Duties |
The
BSOM Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program is seeking part-time Interprofessional Nurse Educators to provide interprofessional clinical, educational, and technical expertise in the development and implementation simulation-based activities. These positions will participate in, and facilitate, interprofessional scenarios with medical students, residents, and other providers from multiple disciplines. These positions will also instruct procedural skills within his/her field of expertise using task trainers. These positions will perform outreach to promote the
BSOM Simulation Program's regional capabilities and facilitate educational sessions as assigned.
Individuals will work approximately 16 hours per week. These will be 12-month, At Will positions.
Work Hours
A typical day will be 8am-5pm. Occasional work outside normal business hours (8am-5pm) required.Occasional overnight travel is required for outreach and education sessions related to the mobile simulation program (1-2 days annually).Occasional work on weekends for special events (1-2 Saturdays annually).
Duties of the position will include -
Instruction (85%)
- Facilitate and co-debrief interdisciplinary simulation sessions using established standards of best practice in healthcare simulation.
- Participate in simulation scenarios as an embedded nursing professional to provide authentic interprofessional learning experiences that reflect real-world clinical practice.
- Model compassionate, patient-centered nursing care and professional communication.
- Teach team-based roles and responsibilities from a nursing perspective, including participation in BLS and ACLS resuscitation.
- Teach and demonstrate nursing procedural skills to medical students and residents within the nursing scope of practice, including:
- Sterile technique
- Foley catheter insertion
- Peripheral IV insertion (including ultrasound-guided techniques, as appropriate)
- Ankle-brachial indexes (ABIs)
- Safe medication preparation and administration principles
- Demonstrate and teach the nursing approach to initial patient assessment as performed in clinical practice, including:
- Obtaining vital signs, chief complaint, and relevant nursing history
- Performing focused physical and mental health assessments
- Communicating assessment findings effectively to the interprofessional care team
- Educate learners on nursing considerations related to medication administration in acute and emergency care settings, including indications, safety checks, monitoring, and adverse effects.
- Teach the appropriate and safe use of commonly used nursing equipment, including IV pumps, monitors, defibrillators, and other bedside technology, in accordance with institutional policies.
- Collaborate with interprofessional and interdisciplinary faculty to deliver simulation scenarios to promote student learning, critical thinking, and clinical decision making.
- Promotes simulation best practices and initiatives established by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL).
Administration (10%)
- Assist simulation team in ensuring correct medical supplies are available for use during scenarios.
- Create mock medications, IVS, and assist with moulage to create realism.
- Attend planning meetings for classes and staff meetings.
- Review scenario case template and facilitator documents.
- Attend dry-runs of scenarios in person or virtually, depending on date of dry-run (dates are variable).
- Attends simulation training sessions through the Office of Clinical Simulation
Outreach (5%)
- Travel to regional locations to promote the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit capabilities and programs.
- Facilitate sessions associated with programs associated with the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit at regional sites and external customers at the Brody School of Medicine Simulation Center.

| Minimum Education/Experience |
- An active Registered Nurse North Carolina License is required. Active licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
- Bachelor's degree plus at least three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in a critical care setting (such as emergency department, intensive care unit); or associates degree with 7 years' experience in a critical area setting.
- Candidate must be eligible for American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, BLS instructor certification, and successful instructor alignment with ECU Health Center for Learning and Performance.

- Demonstrated knowledge of Adult Educational theory, methodologies, and delivery.
- Knowledge of fundamentals of care across the lifespan (pediatric, adult, OB, geriatric).
- Experience teaching using simulation-based education.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator certification (CHSE) from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).
ACLS and PALs certifications.- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a track record of scholarly dissemination in presentation and publication form.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Interpersonal, collaborative, negotiation, team-building and communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
