Job Summary Nidec Mobility America Corporation(NMOA) has a career opportunity for an energetic, focused Resident Engineer for our GM (General Motors) Team, located in the Warren, MI locale.
Objective
The Resident Engineer (GM) serves as General Motors' (GM) primary technical liaison, 'eyes and ears,' and 'bridge' for Nidec Mobility America's automotive electronic devices, serving GM's Technical Staff.
This role provides on-site support during vehicle development, prototype builds, and production launches to meet all program milestones.
The role is embedded at GM's Warren Tech Center Facility to ensure seamless integration of parts and proactive resolution of technical issues.
You will be responsible for managing Nidec Mobility's automotive electronic devices at General Motors (GM), focusing on on-site integration and troubleshooting of critical electrical component technologies, including electronic control units (ECUs) and vehicle switches.
Job Description Key Responsibilities
- Technical Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for GM Design Release Engineers (DRE) and plant personnel.
- Engineering Changes: Initiate and track ECRs (Engineering Change Requests) and process design changes through GM's eMERGE and facilitate test plan and report uploads/approvals in CEMENT.
- Validation Support: Perform software reflashes using tools including Vehicle Spy or CANoe and support bench and vehicle-level testing.
- Launch Management: Attend daily design reviews, support APQP/PPAP documentation.
- Onsite Problem Solving: Support structured root-cause analysis (e.g., Red X, 8D) for any supplier-related quality or integration issues.
- Issue Tracking & Resolution: Investigate and answer issues in GM's PRTS (Problem Resolution and Tracking System).
- Technical liaison with customer by determining requirements for product applications, including performance, physical requirements, testing, documentation and warranty.
- Communicate customer requirements to Nidec organization, primarily Sales, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality.
- Support the Nidec Product Engineering Team with updates and awareness of the customer's specific requirements.
- Accurately communicate all customer deliverables to the Product Engineering and Program Management team to support program milestones.
- Proactively report customer feedback to internal stakeholders and the management team.
- Lead resolution of technical issues with the customer, Nidec Sales, and Product Engineering. This may include functional testing, using vehicle interface tools and data loggers.
- Support product and company presentations with technical, product-related content.
- Prepare technical documentation for use in meetings and presentations. Prepare reports, sketches and drawings as needed for communication.
- Secure approved drawings and documentation as needed from customers and Nidec Product Engineering.
Specialized Responsibilities
- Sensor Integration & Calibration: Ensure ECUs, vehicle switches, and other Nidec products are correctly packaged and aligned within the vehicle architecture requirements.
- Data Analysis & Diagnostics: Collect and analyze data log files from vehicle components to diagnose failures on the vehicle or test benches.
- Software Reflashing: Perform on-site software updates using tools such as Vehicle Spy, CANoe, or customized bench equipment from the engineering team.
- Validation Support: Lead bench and vehicle-level testing for ECUs. Lead Appearance Approval Report (AAR) and Touch, Appearance, Lighting, Color (TALC) reviews to gain approvals for customer vehicle switches and communicate any issues back to engineering teams.
- Issue Management: Track and resolve issues in GM's PRTS (Problem Resolution and Tracking System).
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, or related Engineering.
- Experience: 3+ years in automotive engineering/ECUs/Switches vehicle development, as a 1st Tier Supplier.
- Knowledge /Technical Skills:
- Understanding of vehicle development stages and Advanced Product Quality Planning tools, like DFMEA and ADVP&R.
- Knowledge of vehicle networks and communication protocols like Ethernet and CAN/LIN.
- Proficiency in GM-specific systems platforms: PRTS, Supply Power, CEMENT, eMERGE/ECM (releasing part numbers and processing design change ECRs/TWOs).
- Vector CANoe / Vehicle Spy/NeoVI: For diagnostic data and programming.
- Working knowledge of GD&T and CAD software such as NX, Teamcenter.
- Familiarity with IATF 16949 and GM 1927 Global Supplier Quality standards.
- Manage, maintain, and support customer documentation
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Must be able to multitask to manage multiple projects at one time.
- Must have strong attention to detail and work with a sense of urgency and accuracy.
- Ability to read prints & schematics is a plus
- Ability to use CANalyzer/LIN logs is a plus
Performance Indicators (KPIs) Success in this role is typically measured by:
- Part Release Accuracy: Maintain a detailed log of part changes and impacts driving customer ECRs.
- Issue Closure Rate: Speed and accuracy of resolving PRTS tickets.
- Launch Readiness: Successful completion of APQP/PPAP milestones on schedule.
- Communication and Relationships: Maintain and build business relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Quality Metrics: Maintaining low PPM (parts per million) and avoiding production disruptions at GM assembly plants.
